I thought that Ragnarok in the Nordic mythology had already happened; the gods had lost and our world was born out of the ashes of that long-past world.

I still think Columbus should be honored -- imagine you're in his crew, you have no idea if there really are islands out there or not, there's not much food on the ship, your navigation is off by thousands of miles (they're not in India!). It's as if the Apollo 11 went up to the moon with only vague assurances that they really would find land up there and not just a little ball of green cheese.
