October 11th is coming up, and that's Columbus day. You may not be aware of this because

a) You don't live in America
b) You have to go to school/work anyway
c) You generally never know what day of the week it is

My English teacher questioned us about how we feel about that day, if it should be celebrated or not. In fact, we have to come up with a persuasive essay to either be for or against it. The challenge is actually caring about it, but it got me thinking, there are native americans against it (look up the story of Columbus if you don't know anything beyond paper hats from kindergarten, you'll see what I mean). But there are arguments for keeping the holiday that, although he was a morally corrupt man and wasn't even the first in America, it was his landing there that changed the world forever.

What do you guys think?

It should only be if you believe in blind patriotism. Columbus did some pretty damn terrible things, and as such is by no means a praiseworthy character. However, if you abstract him into some mythical "ideal Columbus", then sure.. give him a holiday and make all the lies you want about him. Kinda like how they did with Jesus.

In my own opinion... Ive never really thought it was much of a reason to have a holiday, but meh. People want to celebrate, go ahead.

I usually just take the day off to hang out

Columbus Day is just an excuse to give Americans off because they complain about Canada having that day off due to Thanksgiving.

Yet when it's time for your Thanksgiving we don't do crap.

The only real reason I enjoy Columbus Day is because it's my best friend's birthday.

Screw Columbus. He seems to be WAY overhyped.

Yes, but Boxing Day is during the Christmas holiday, so it's not like its an extra day off.

So? It's still a "special" day.

And not all of us Americans get Columbus Day off. Just some.

Boxing Day is "have a bunch of Christmas decorations/items at 50% off and toss in a few extra sales that translate into one-hour waits at the cash" day.

It doesn't matter if you want a day off, I'm asking about the actual meaning of the holiday, how we consider Columbus to be a hero. And as Leg pointed out, many are not affected by it. I would imagine it's a bigger deal on the east coast.

You should honour the Vikings over Columbus.

A) They landed on North America first
B) They're not uncool
C) Vikings greater than Italian exploders anyday.

Or even the proof that Scottish monks landed here before Columbus is irrefutable. Columbus was a wuss compared to Vikings, or even drunken Scotsmen. Who would you rather have a holiday for? Badass conquerors or some sissy that came over on a boat called the Santa Maria. It couldn't have been something cool, like the Santa Claus, nope, Santa Maria.

Yeah his character was questionable, but he did find this place. The Vikings didn't stay as I recall. So while Columbus wasn't a great guy, he more or less founded this place. As for the holiday, I guess sure.

It's not the first time questional characters are recognized. Look at some of the US Presidents, including the current one.

Nice excuse you have there. That's like choosing movie theater A over B because you live on the same street as A, even though B is across the street. You should chill out, Yoshi was asking for a legit discussion, no need to rant about it.

That's my two cents on it.

No.

Wasn't the first to land in the "New World". Vikings landed in Canada, Chinese are said to have landed in California, Africans in South America, Irish and Scots in America.

Knew he wasn't in the East Indies.

Killed lots of Natives

Bought natives back to Europe as trophies

Was given a retarded American name because America sucks like that.

D) Because they would have beaten the shit out of Columbus and his rag-tag crew had they ever waged in a battle.
E) Because they're cooler than pirates or ninjas will EVER be. (That's right, I said ninjas you otaku fucks.)
F) Lost Vikings for Snes kicked ass.
G) Their ships were a lot more bad ass than Columbus' "boats".
