Remember Nintendos? And Super Nintendos? You probably still have one, like I do. Mine still works just fine. Every now and then the Nintendo will do that blinking light thing when you start a game but you just try it over and over again and it will work eventually. No fuss, no muss. But what, the fuck, is up with these new gen consoles that break after 3 minutes of game time? (sarcasm.) My PS2 is fucked, and so is my X-Box. My PS2's dvd-rom is horribly slow now. I remember when you put a game in, and it would load automatically. Now, when a disc in in, I'll turn on the power and it will come to the menu screen. I wait about 30 seconds, then it loads. Maybe. Some game wont work at all. Like MGS: Substance. I've never played that game because it's never worked. It will say Disc Read Error or something. It's like that with a lot of my games. It works sometimes if you tilt the PS2 vertically. It's weird, I know. Does the same thing with certain dvd's. Doesn't work whatsoever. Then it skips all the damn time, even if the dvd is new and in perfect condition. My X-Box started messing up on me recently. I bought it when it first came out, so it's only 3 years old. I get choppy frame rate on games where I've never gotten it before and sometimes it will just up and freeze. It SUCKS when you're playing Morrowind. I corrupted my game save yesterday. I had so much time invested into that game save. I went to save it, the progress bar went halfway and BAM! Froze. When I went to load it again, of course it sad "Bad Game Save Data". I was THIS close to stomping on my X-Box. |---| This is bullshit. I understand products like tennis shoes and other articles of clothing wearing out over time but when it comes to something like this, it's unacceptable. Hell, I've been using the same dvd-rom and cd-rom on my PC since April '01 now and it STILL works perfectly. And it's gone through high heat and low cold and probably has pounds of dust inside of it since I never cleaned it before. Oh, forgot to mention, my PS2 was the second generation. Whatever that one was. Not the first model they came out with, but the second. I even updated the dvd drivers that came with the hard drive disc. This isn't about a solution, I'm just bitching. I'm pissed because it's not broken to the point where I have to buy a new PS2 and X-Box, but it's broke enough where I have to to enjoy a certain level of gaming without getting pissed off every 10 minutes when something goes wrong. In other words, it works....but not the way it should. Am I wrong to expect my PS2 to last me a LOT longer than a few years? It's not like I payed a couple of dollars for it. Oddly enough, my Gamecube has never given me a problem. |

I've heard some Gamecube horror stories. I'm sure people are willing to share. I got a few hardware problems in the past, but I haven't played in a long time. I think it comes down to cartridges are more sturdy. To play a cartridge you don't need lasers and stuff that can be destroyed if you touch the inside or look at it or think about it. |

My Gamecube's eject button got sticky. Then we tried to clean it with nail polish remover and dissolved and fused some of the plastic. Next time I'll read the bottle. Anyway, now I have to hold the lid down with a book, but the system itself still works fine. On the other systems, I couldn't say. I have a PS2, but we got it not two weeks ago. My SNES still works fine. Except the mouse. The left button hardly works anymore. WHERE'S YOUR QUALITY ASSURANCE NOW NINTENDO? I CAN'T PLAY MARIO PAINT WORTH A DAMN! Pity because Mario Paint was awesome. Anyway. I didn't take care of my SNES stuff worth half a shit as a kid, so it's amazing that it all still works as well as it does. I do wish that mouse worked though. |

Originally posted by FinneramIndeed, hell my Gamecube controllers would break if I handled them as I did as kid. (throwing them on the ground, dragging them between me and my sister becus we were fighting over "MY TURN"...) I had my Gamecube for over 2 years and it hadn't got broken yet. If internet tells me anything, the least durable console seems to be PS2. Then i'm not sure if it's X-box or Gamecube that is more durable. Since I heard as much stories about them breaking. Check out Lens Calibration Guide, from what I know that's the most common error with Gamecube. But I still have to hear about a Gamecube breaking personally (I know alot of people with a Gamecube here). |

Welcome to the Rest of the World. I've had to tinker with my PS2 to get it working again before, and I don't want to do it again. If I do during the release of a certain game, people will die. Just a thought: Would newer systems breaking have anything to do with the updated technology? It seems to me that PS2s main problem always seems to be Disc Read Errors... |

I haven't had too many problems with my GC. The eject button does get stuck a times (which is easy to fix), and Turok Evolution sometimes freeze when it's loading a new level (but it saves before it start loading a level, so it's no big deal. You just turn the system off and on, and continue from where you were)

My PS2 hasnt worked since forever, I dont play much on it anyways. And my X-Box stoped working fast recently. Its probably the discs for the X-Box as there used and scratched up. My gamecube though has NEVER had any problems.

Leg, what you said about your Morrowind save is why I almost always have a backup or two of my "main" characters (I have a few others that I use for the other guilds, but I don't focus much on the main quest with them and so I don't worry about if they get messed up). It happened to me a few days after I got the game, but aside from that and an oddly timed freeze (I turned, and BAM! it froze. ), I've had no trouble. Although, it didn't freeze in the middle of saving that time. It just somehow messed up the save. I remember back when systems lasted longer than a few years. My SNES, which I've had since 1997, finally stopped working this year. Somehow, late last year, a piece of the outer plastic on the corner, near the reset switch, broke off. It didn't get inside, but I think something did and messed it up. Now if you tap it while playing, the game instantly freezes. Still, it lasted seven years. I've heard of people having Xbox and PS2 problems after one or two years of owning them - a friend of mine, for example. His Xbox stopped working (I don't remember the details of it) about six months after he got it. Probably something his brother did, but... My GC has had both the Reset and the Eject buttons stick. |

Moving parts break down faster. That's why the Gamecube has had the quickest "Whoops, can't read the game" errors out of all Nintendo consoles. That's why your DS is still going to be working when the DSAP is out, but the PSP won't. (edited by Cymoro on 10-03-04 01:34 PM) |

Something I always wondered about: Why the crap do the battery saves in my The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link still work? They're supposed to last 5 years, I still play them, and they're still good... Anyway, More the the point, my GameCube sometimes skips with one game, and one game only (Sonic Adventure 2: Battle) - same with my DreamCast (Power Stone 2. Dammit. Favorite game out of everything ever has to be the broken one, eh?) I'm not familiar with the horror stories too much, but gods... My PlayStation died within a month, and the PS2 has quite a few problems mostly with the DVD drive randomly dying... I don't have and XBOX, though a friend does and I haven't heard of anything wrong with it. Their SNES also died a few months ago. So aside from that, it would seem Sony makes the least durable stuff.

My friends gamecube has so much dust in it its not funny... After 30 minutes of gameplay, he has to reset. But the fact his gamecube isnt completely busted amazes me. His 4 year old brother enjoys throwing large blunt objects.... gamecube included... at walls. Nintendo always has made durable products SNES is still in tip top shape. Game boy ORIGINAL is still as good as it was out of the box, GBC, functions like a dream, GBA, maybe the battery pack holder is broken, but nothing a little tape couldnt fix N64 is always fine working fine. Nintendo is the king of durability. |

Originally posted by Kratos Aurion Hah, same here. I NEVER did that hold the reset button crap.. I was like three, four years old, I probably did bullshit like rip the cartridge out of the system while it's still on. I mean look. I took that pic a few months ago, and a while after that my brother erased the game. Anyway, see tha top file? That was a name I made when I was hella young (my mom played, that's why she has all the stuff. I never beat it), and it survived for ass eternity. I never took care of games. Rock on Nintendo. On the other hand, my 308 death Zelda LttP file erased itself a while ago. It still does, I have to play on my gameboy advance now. Super Mario World is even worse to my save files, and Super Metroid has died a few times. I don't know how my SNES games are in worse quality than my NES games. Maybe I should have pulled out the cartridges more. And that's my story. |

I have yet to have a problem with my SNES, my N64 doesn't break down if I keep it clean, my NES works perfectly, my Gamecube works perfectly, I have to jam down the R button a bit on my GBASP, but that's because it spent so much time in my backpack that the sensor started to go, my PS2 is fine... But my PSX, of course, was a piece of crap. I could never get games running, I couldn't touch the top cover without the game fucking up, my save files randomly erased themselves, and of course, the power button would get stuck. This was after half a year of use. I am not a fan. Of course, I have a first generation PS2 (if first generation means gotten about 18 months after being released in 2001), and it's never, ever given me a problem. Go figure. Actually, yeah, I'll ask. What is a first and second generation PS2? |

Thought the N64 controllers are crap at durability, or well they are durable but the stick get's wierd after awhile. (thought it's still fully usable). I had only two gamecube game freezing on me, The sims. Hell The sims for Gamecube is unstable and it's not my gamecube (it's common that it freezes often ), Majoras mask from that collection CD also likes to freeze. But that only happened to my sister. All of thoose errors seems software related since other on the net have problems with thoose games for some reason. And oh, I hadn't finished the first Zelda either. Thought i'm at the end on my Gamecube zelda collection CD. Gotta finish it and do the second quest soon. |

I dont know why, but this is completely opposite for me, my SNES barely works...but my ps1 from forever ago, works fine, so does my ps2, and xbox....and my ps2 wasnt taken care of really, only thing is it takes awhile to load dvd's(movies) other then that its perfect, as with the controllers. |
