Today is a day of sadness. My shitty Mercury Topaz, covered in bue tape, has broken down in a Target parking lot and subsequently towed to the impound lot. Either I pay the astronomic price of $200 to get it out of jail and the mysterious and mostly likely high price to fix it, or put that same money towards a new (used) car.

so my question to everyone is this: What is the most reliable car you have ever known? Nothing flashy, nothing huge, just a Point A to Point B car with AC and very few problems. a budget of 5k is ideal.

My brother drives a Toyota Corolla with 250000 miles on it. It seems like a pretty good car. It devours (burns) oil like a mofo, but he's never had any other problems with it.

I know a lot of people in this town drive Ford Festivas, which are shitty little boxes that usually drive on a stickshift. While crappy they don't seem to be hard or expensive to fix. And they're hella small = good gas mileage.

From what I keep hearing, Chevy Cavaliers are really tough little cars. As long as you keep them well oiled, they usually last for a while. It's also what I drive...

I got my 2000 Cavalier for $6000, so you should be able to find one a bit older than that for about what you want to spend. That is, assuming you FIND one first...

My dad has owned 5 mazdas. Mazda 323/3s, and 626/6s (The number before the slash are made before 2003, and after is after 2003 but they are basically the same car) are really reliable. If you get the 4cl manual you can easily get 30mpg from the 626 and close to 40mpg from the 323. My dad has gotten all 5 of them up to 200,000 miles and they were running fine (and my dad drives them to 200,000 in like 5 years, so they can handle hard driving conditions), and then all five of them got totalled in accidents. Either parked on the side of the road, or stoped in traffic and just crashed into by idiots who don't know how to drive. N E ways, mazdas are really reliable, they rarely break down, and they are quite roomy and comfortable to ride, smooth shocks and stuff. So i'd definately go with the mazda cause that's what i drive now, and it's amazing, and they last crazy.

whoa, nice! dunno if i can afford a 2003 though. What does anybody have to say towards saturns, hondas, or nissans? good or bad. both would be preffered.

And MathonNapkins, thanks for the Festiva tips, but there's just a certain low that I wont even go.

Before my parents divorced, I had a niiice black Toyota MR-2 (1993). I was practically in love with that car I could almost kiss that thing. It had everything I'd need and my mom took it.

She gave it to my uncle, which he crashed about a week after he got his driver's liscense, and my mom used my previous college funds to buy a new one and she put that car in the dump! That was the time I began to hate my parents, and I still do. I only hang around my mom to earn money, and that's it.

Thank god I'm almost off probation. Then I could buy a new car and head off!

Maybe a Hyundai Tiburon or a Civic. I cannot expect anything above 10k; nor could I expect to buy another nice MR-2, good mileage or otherwise. It's enough to make a tough guy cry.

My moms car, the Ford T-bird. I never drove it but it had no A/C, the window you could barely roll down, the door you had to open on the outisde, broken windshield but the shit worked. Oh yeah and the mirror on top, rearview one. Yeah it fell down so we super glued it back.

Super gluing rearviews is always fun, cause then it's 1000000000000000000 times more succeptible to falling off again. Hyundai Tiburon is a nice car, I didn't know it was that inexpensive, unless you were talking a used one, then you could definately get that price.

Yeah, I was referring to that.
I found a nice 2002 that still has around 90,000 miles left for $10,550. I could'nt believe that offer. I'll just flash 10 grand, shorten the 550 and see if I can make a deal with the guy who owns it.

I'd go for a Toyota anything.
Decent in every way, and you can often find used cheap ones.

Uhm.. those Russian cars.. Lada, I hear they are _REALLY_ reliable. They can start when it's like -30 degrees Celsius outside without heating the engine up first (and that's like.. impossible for any other car xP). You'd probably have to build your own AC though xP.
