There's kind of a problem with spaces though. What if you had like a level design question and screenshots? 'Level Screenshots' implies pics of entire levels which would be wrong.
(Ironically, I suppose, I haven't posted a thread since I read this. )

When this thread is done (I see it for collectingt ideas), its results could be copied into a normal stickied (and closed) thread; distinguishing what is rule and what only recommendation, plus using the good overwiev then of a new stickied thread, free of comments. An example how I mean this is as follows, although this deals about RM2k (the forum's purpose is similar to SMW's ones, except the editor of course):
http://rpg2k.foren.4players.de/viewtopic.php?t=44159 (German )

In this thread we also could include recommendations for the "optimal" thread setup (dunno know if this would make sense and avoiding senseless threads ), like

for demo threads:
- Name of the hack, status (approxiamately, of course it is not possible to set the exact status when everything will be finished etc,)
- screens in .JPG or PNG
- if custom blocks, ASM hacks etc. got used, it should be mentioned. Of course this does not mean, you'd have to include EVERY single custom block you used, but a nice pharase like "The hack contains custom blocks from the Block Inserter tool" or "There are some neat ASM hacks here, added a boss life bar" or othere might be
1.) fitting far better and
2.) be a better guideline, to avoid threads like "my hack" titles and "I'll post screenshots in two weeks" in the first post

There's NO WAY IN HELL I'm allowing JPG screens, but otherwise I'm with you on this.

I agree, JPGs ruin the whole screenshot if one does not know how to make them correctly. But you can't really forbid people making JPGs, not everyone is able to make PNGs, ya know.

Hey, dunno if I should put this here, but for the love of god, not everyone's browser reads txt as an image, so get a real host. There's more than enough free hosts that allow image linking. Find one and go there instead of this txt crap.

Yes, previous versions of Mozilla and Firebird displayed the program code in the tab/window usually when attempting to open a renamed .PNG to .TXT file on Geoshitties Geocities instead of the image file. It goes vice versa with many other file types like .GIF, etc. ... even .RAR sometimes displayed the code than to download the files for me
From the improvements, all builds from Firefox 0.8 on should be able to handle these "foreign" extension better than in 0.7 or earlier, but I didn't try it yet
Lycos and Angelfire should offer true remote linking, but I don't know which is the BEST freehost, if you only need to host some screens and demo(s) from your hacK. In Germany, Lycos.de fits very well ... unlimited bandwith, remote linking work though

Nice addition.

Why not accept GIF screenshots? Jeez. I can make a 512 color GIF for example, although wether or not it displays correctly is another story, but still.

And for the love of God STOP USING TXT EXTENSIONS

Especially when you link to an image. I HATE having to save it, rename it, and then open it again.

It's a pain in the ass, thanks.

Case in point: GIF format allows 256 colors. SNES screen = 256*224 = 57344 pixels. One tile = 8*8 = 64 pixels. One tile allows a number of optional colors depending on BPP, but let's say 4. 57344 / 64 = 896 concurrent tiles, each capable of having around 4 different colors. That's 3584 colors. Add to this possible filters emulators/people might apply (eagle, 2xSAI) and you've got a shitload of colors.

I'm not at all buying the not everyone can create PNGs argument. There are freeware or atleast shareware programs for this all over the internet. The format has been around for ten years now; there's been plenty of time for programs to support it, and fact is most programs do; viewers, editors and browsers alike. So if you can't provide a PNG, it's you being lazy, that's all. Can't install programs on your computer? Send the hack to someone else and ask them to take screenshots. There's just no excuse for this.

And I would prefer that people took screenshots without filters.

But heh, that's just my opinion. I'm not fond how it looks with this filters. I like the pixels...

I almost always use PNG expect for thoose cases where JPG is better, PNG can have very big file sizes on photos.

I think you're a bit confused, there, Jesper. The SNES is only capable of displaying 249 colors at a time (16 palettes x 15 colors each + background color), unless advanced PPU features are used. Thus, the vast majority of the time, GIF works well for SNES screenshots. But, as you said, when transparency and fancy SuperSmooth2XGlossyChunkyEagleCrap filters are used, it suddenly doesn't work so well.

I use GIF mostly out of habit (and the fact that PSP has crashed my computer while saving PNGs in the past), but I'm slowly starting to migrate towards PNG. I only wish all browsers had decent PNG support...I usually can't view them outside of Web pages without putting a space after the URL for some reason.

I use PNG all the way, except I plan to work with animated stuff; MNG is superiror to animated GIF, but as posted above a very low number of browsers actually support it.
PNG simply is superior and, hey, ZSNES already allows the direct dump in PNG format (besides BMP ), it has less space and more advantages like support of one alpha-channel, semi-transparency in supporting image viewers and browsers, up to 16.7 million of colors and it's algorithm is free unlike CompuServes GIF

And well, I just noticed. People didn't follow this "naming guideline" very much it seems...

None of the threads on the first pages uses [stuff] did everyone forgot about it, or was it just a bad idea after all?

This cannot be enforced. The idea really is neat, as it helps a lot; but as many people know - many people do not read stickied threads, and even if you came up with uber-huge font size, ultra fast marquee-tags and blinking, it won't be read by everyone.

Putting the staff in charge might be helpful, but renaming every thread and cropping longer titles is not only time-consuming but might be annoying over time

Heh, blame me for the bump. I just told Jesper "This thing hadn't been enforced". And the post above his was a try to revive this thread, which I wasn't succeful with.

Why not unsticky it for awhile? Probably dosen't help but... more sticky threads in a forum = the less people care about them. This forum have the most sticky threads.
