I thought I should make a separate poll for this, instead of just a thread that's not specifically about this question. (I put it here so more people will see it, and because it's not as much about art.) To sum it up, if I leave it the way it is, it adds up to 201K of images. If I take out the images to the right, it's only 98K but then there's a big empty spot on higher resolutions that looks ugly. So I'm wondering if people think it's worth the extra bandwidth to keep those space-filler images, if they can live with a big empty spot for the much smaller size, if even that's too big, or if anyone has other suggestions (in particular how to make the images smaller - I've tried JPG and PNG). BTW the empty blue spot to the right of the links is actually a cell with a solid BG colour, not an image.

Seeing as I'm on dial-up and therefore disabled all backgrounds, it doesn't really matter to me. If I still had my DSL, though, I'd say keep it at where it is. Good cache on a browser means the background's actually only downloaded once, anyway. Might as well make it worth while. XD

You could just go and make a new layout *shot*

Id say 201k is fine.... though I am on broadband so anything you did I probably wouldnt really notice

Hmm...mine's around 100K...I think...and look at what mine turns out to be all told.

As long as you do it right...and it's not something like 200 300 500 10024280498190348 K...then you're fine.

If there's an issue with blackspace...maybe you might want to try to rework it a bit. If it absolutely requires you to use that much K...well...don't be suprised if a few 56Kers come running.

Er, the idea of 'Something Else' is that you post your suggestion.
I'd like to find a better way to fix it, but I'm not seeing much in options... Would it look crappy if I changed that portion of the BG to solid water and made it a really thin image?

Anything >= 30kB = far too large.

Especially when using a nearly 8 year old laptop with a 40kbps connection that has problems loading IE itself (yes, with about:blank home) in less than 10 seconds.

I've managed to keep 99% of my layouts nder 10kB. Though those who loooove huge anime wallpapers images must use giant images which makes Lappy 4015 sad.

Sounds like "Lappy 4015" is pretty sad already. Why would you even have layouts enabled with such a slow system? (BTW, someone who uses a font that he knows doesn't work in Mozilla, which isn't exactly some obscure POS that nobody uses, isn't really in a position to be complaining about the size of the images people use. )

All my layouts are under 60k, even the most graphical ones, the ones that are so graphical they require a static scrollbar. You shouldn't need more than that at all.

Personally I think 50 kb is max, since 20 100 kb images = 2 MB download on dial-up. Which would take ages for them.

You should be able to keep a layout below 70kb, and anything between 60-70kb is basically one big image.
Resize and/or save your images optimal (photoshop's 'save for web' option has tons of ways to keep quality maximum and filesize minimum).
I don't get why you made a seperate thread for this though, you already asked it in your MA thread

I'm pretty sure I have one of the smallest layouts.

Um, also, I have images switched off in my browser, otherwise this site with all its fancy over the top layouts takes waaay too much time to load. So go nuts with the images - I don't care.

I don't really care (Have post layout disabled most of the time) but I say that 100k isn't that much of a problem (even with a 56k modem).

I tend to be of the belief that you should always try to make a layout as small as possible, because layouts add up, and if they're really image intensive, they'll kill people on dialup or with slower PC's.

I used to try to make all my layouts have an absolute MAXIMUM of 20k, but I was more often than not below that.

I'm not sure what my current layout is, but I'd be surprised if it was very big.

Course, when I managed my own Acmlmboard, we'd have people with layouts over 200k. Which sucks when there are several of these larger layouts in the one thread on the one page..... it's one of the reasons the Citadel eventually went away from using Acmlmboards.

Yeah, they do add up. I'm starting to get tired of having to load up 2 GB of graphics just to see the thread. You know it's really bad when someone has a cable connection(me) and it still lags because of all the images having to load up. In conclution my layout is the best, taking up a mean 0K of space.

I wouldn't mind 90 KB...

...for a decent, original and/or creative layout.

But hyperhacker, to be blunt, I find your layout far from worth the 90> KB it currently is. It looks unsorted, cluttered, those links and post stats are terribly useless because the links can already be found everywhere on the board, and the stats are right next to your post.

But worst of all, the big anime image. Really, in every thread you post in I have to see that same anime image. On top of that, I've seen that very same image on a ton of other websites already.

Please, no.
