This poll is mainly about website color schemes, but it could apply to anything shown on a computer monitor or video screen of some type (rather than, say, a book)...

My personal preference is light text on a dark background...the other way seems too "bright" or something. I don't understand why so many HTML guides tell you to always use the default color scheme (i.e., black on white, with blue links and purple for visited links)...

I like light text on a dark backgrounds aswell...

Rather a text with a sharp color than a background with a sharp color...

I don't care either way.
As long as the font and background work together (contrasting enough to be readable, but not too extreme.), it's all fine for me.

I don't care either as long as they look good together. Light text on a dark background does seem to work better but either way is good with me.

Light on dark, easily. The other way hurts my eyes, somehow.

Light text on a dark background looks better, but is also easier on the eyes... There are a few sites (manual pages, for example) that it's not appropriate.

Also, it's much better not to just have plain white on plain black, either; that's not original.

Anything that looks good. Bright backgrounds generally look bad, though.

Anything that is readable and is not Black on white.

I can only stand Black on white if it's a little box or something... the whole screen.

I usually have grey on white whenever I make own colour schemes, just more relaxing for the eyes. (in mIRC I have grey on black expect for my own text which is White. Looks very nice that way and the rest of the colours is the normal ones...)

I'd probably go light on dark but...as you can see I'm not currently.

I would normally go light on dark... but my layout is preventing me from doing so... (and sticking light on dark on light would look... )

Layout change is coming soon though... so Ill probably do light on dark again.

Edit: Wow... that was a mistake of posting.

Normally, light on dark because it looks distinctive and stands out.

But there are exceptions. (see: blog.)

I actually like dark on light, as long as the background is very close to white; preferably pure white. Other than that I'll opt for the light on dark.

I prefer light text on a dark background, because dark text on a light background is...well...let me put it this way: Ever tried reading the label on a light bulb while it's on?

Generally a matte white background isn't going to be as vibrant as a light bulb, unless you have hyper-sensitive eyes.
