What if an asteroid comes right at us at speeds never before observed in the history of the universe, like 5 million times the speed of light, and we observe it like 1 hour before it hits!!

Or a new type of radiation that is extremely fast and undetectable since we don't know about it... which would agitate atoms immensely and burn anything in its path to a crisp in 3 seconds!

Yah. It could happen.

I highly doubt that an asteroid would travel at that speed...

That's kinda cool actually, I haven't heard of an asteriod that came close to the earth yet. I'd like to see if if I could. We used to have a telescope but it was ancient, so I think we trashed it.

There may be fast particles that goes very unlimeted fast that dosen't react with other atoms. But thoose would be invisible for us anyway if they don't react with anything...

...We've already accelerated particles beyond the speed of light. 3 times the speed of light to be exact. All at good ol' Princeton. We've also managed to completely stop photons. Without using Absolute Zero temperatures. I don't understand the physics or math of these phenomena, but to say that Einstein is wrong is an understatement

This is kinda scary...I have this feeling that life as we know it will end sonetime during my lifetime...I know this asteroid should miss, but what if the scientists' orbit calculations are a little bit off...?

Then again, I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that mass extinctions tend to occur in a 26-million year cycle, and we're about 13 million years from the last one...

Ever notice the pattern to it? The world's gonna end in 1988, then 1992, then 1996, then 2000, etc... I did hear something about the 26-million-year cycle though; supposedly our solar system does a complete orbit around something every 26 million years, and there's a 'photon belt' that goes around vertically, that we would pass through every 13 million years (going through both sides in one orbit). They say that when we pass into this belt, it'll either be daylight for 3 days or the sky will turn red, and no electronics will work. Personally I think it's a lotta BS, but if either of those happen, I'm going into hiding.

So would we be able to see this asteroid any good with the naked eye or maybe binoculars?

So you mean the world always ends in U.S. election years? Actually, if Bush gets re-elected, I wouldn't be surprised about the world ending...

Then again, those are also leap years...

Advice to all those who have some doubt about this: go buy a lottery ticket.

You have better odds of winning the jackpot than the Earth has of getting nailed by this puppy tomorrow.

Ah, Colleen. Always putting logic into these threads and quelling the mindless drivle of "OMG ir r n00000 wunt diess tumrrw!!!!!11111121one".

There is no risk of the world just ending tomorrow, or the day after that. Humans are tough and resiliant. Bush isn't going to kill off the planet. There is not going to be a nuclear holocaust. The only thing that is going to even have a chance at killing us is a natural disaster or an out break of a powerful disease.
