An asteroid is going to come pretty close to earth this Wednesday. Apparently it's the biggest thing to come so close to Earth this century.

The Article

It won't hit us though At least, not this time around anyways....

I just wanna know if we'd be able to see it at all... probably need a telescope.

LOL, sorry to disappoint you there, Legion. But hey, if you're still ticking in the year 2562, it might hit then...

I won't go to Hell, I'm going for confessional on Tuesday, so I can repent my sins. Tis' a noble Catholic thing to do

Anyhow, I really wonder how many rogue asteroids there are. We know about the big ones that are in regular orbit with Earth...But what about the big ones that we haven't detected yet that aren't pulled into Jupiter's gravitational pull?

well, most asteroids come from the belt anyways, i'm not sure about the one that will past by us...

anyways, i'm not going to pay attention to these "earth is going to get hit by an asteroid things" until the major news networks start having "Sept-11" coverage of it...

We're not going to get hit by this one, but it's significant, just cause it's the largest one of these to pass so close in a century. So, it's just an interesting event, not a OMFG TEH WORLD IS TEH ENDING!!!11 thing.

Like I said, I'd like to see if we can see it when it passes by....

As for what the asteriod looks like -- a friend and I are not sure if it looks like a Peanut, or more like Mr Hankey....

Hiryuu who doesn't want want to learn how to nuke something in outer space? I mean come on we have thousands of nukes, but we never use them.

Meh couldn't care less if one hit the earth. Chances are it would just hit the ocean and everyone would die except the people on high ground, or away from the coast. (Kansas yay) So if this astroid hits lucky me to bad for you I guess... (ok I would feel bad I am not that insensitive...)

You scared me since I thought this thread was going to be a warning for the big apolocyse. x)

Nuking the astroid would probably split it several pieces and make a "shotgun" effect. Meaning that the piecies will rain over a larger area.

You weren't the only one, Kitten Yiffer. Most threads like this ususally end up turning into end-of-the-world scenario discussions...

Also, in theory, wouldn't the smaller pieces just burn up in the atmosphere?

In theory, yes, but it depends on the size of them and what they're made up of. Some have been known to break up into smaller pieces which all burn up, but other stuff can stay solid and so it doesn't all burn up.

But as said, this won't hit us, it just gets close enough to provide a viewing challenge for those that are interested.

Another reminder that this planet is just a tiny speck in the universe...

How big is the risk that such a big-ass rocks hits the earth? They can burn up in the atmosphere aswell...

No, it is the big ass rocks that have the high chance of penetrating the atmosphere, surviving the gravity field of Juptier (which protects us) and then smashing into the Earth causing a near-mass extinction.

if they fly into our atmosphere, they aren't coming out again unless some stronger gravity fields comes around or they come in at the right angle to skim off the atmosphere like skipping a rock at a lake...
