[Fixed it, trashing thread.] This computer's messing with my head, I swear. So a long time ago, I got rid of the modem in my computer, in favour of a network card to connect my cable modem. This worked good, but I later decided to put the dialup modem back in in order to use the computer as a phone. Well, I found that when both the modem and network card are installed, neither will work. Whatever, I took the modem out and went about my business. Tonight, however, I decided I should install a second hard drive I had kicking around. So I did, and after a lot of screwing around (I had it working, then the screw fell on the board and I had to rip everything apart to get it out ) I had it set up again. The new hard drive works, but now the network card doesn't anymore. What's really interesting is that somehow, the modem that I swear I removed, has been installed for God knows how long and the NIC still worked. It wasn't until I realized it was there that it started acting up again. (Right now I'm connected through USB which is very unstable.) I also noticed that when I rebooted the first time with the new HD and the cable connected, the light on the cable modem which is only supposed to come on when the computer is connected was on even before I turned the computer on. Now it just won't come on at all, nor will the light on the NIC. So what would cause this kind of thing to happen? They were both working (somehow) for a good while before this. I've verified that there isn't an IRQ conflict, disabled the modem, and disabled allowing the NIC to be turned off (and of course rebooted). I also tried clicking Repair, it says it failed to renew the IP address. How can I get both working together? I really don't want to have to open the thing up again (already did it twice tonight) to take the modem out. (edited by HyperHacker on 09-26-04 01:41 AM) |
