So, opinions change, you hear new things, but currently what is your favorite release of this year?

My pick is Miss Machine by The Dillinger Escape Plan. The songwriting is phenomenal, the band is still technical even though they've toned that way down, production is top-notch, and the vocalist is better with DEP than Dimirtri and Mike Patton were; he's the perfect fit. Awesome album, though I'm not sure which DEP album I like the most: this one or their self-titled EP.

A runner-up would hafta be Error's self-titled EP; it's basically electro hardcore in the same style as Atari Teenage Riot. Error consists of Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion, NIN programmer Atticus Ross, and his brother Leopold Ross. And for this EP (I'm sad he's not an actual standing member), you've got Greg Puciato on vocals, who is the current vocalist for...The Dillinger Escape Plan! Most of the stuff he does with DEP is hardcore screaming, but occasionally he'll sing and also have a very sassy tone to his clean and scream vocals. On this EP, it's all sassy. :P It's so delightfully wonderful... The vocals on "Burn in Hell" are wild. And if you care, you can go here to download a track. And I'm glad I bought the CD! The packaging is excellent; it's a mini-CD, but it's got a clear rim around it to make it the size of a regular CD, and the logos and black artwork sprawl out across it. Wonderful...

There are other lovely albums released this year. Stuff by Mastodon, haloblack, Einstuerzende Neubauten, Arsis, Capharnaum, etc., but I think I like those two the most.

And an album I haven't yet listened to. Been meaning to...just haven't...done so.

Oh, and I adore Air's Talkie Walkie, and Telefon Tel Aviv's Map of What Is Effortless is swankalicious electronic muzaak as well.

I really like Lost Prophets' new album, but so far it's definately Machinae Supremacy's Deus Ex Machinae that is by far and away the best.

I've still got to hear Rammstein's Reise, Reise and Mansun's Kleptomania so it's still all to play for

Probably one of these; Franz Ferdinand (self titled) | Snow Patrol - Final Straw | Mattias Alkberg BD - Tunaskolan
Tunaskolan and Franz Ferdinand are two fucking awesome debut albums, I've listened to them hundreds of times and I still like them. Final Straw is just an awesome album, simple as that

And Mattias Alkberg BD is a swedish group, so you probably haven't heard of them. I manged to find a review of the album in English here though, scroll down a bit to see it.

I'll probably add more albums here when I can think of some. If I do

Definitely looking forward to Reise, Reise... Hoping it's on par with or perhaps better than Mutter, which is an excellent album.

Iron by Ensiferum. It's not as good as their self titled album, but it's better than anything else in 2004.

Hmm..favorite release of this year. My Brandy and Usher CD are pretty good but so far Kanye West's album College Dropout is good to me. I loves it, one of the good rappers that finally come out. Different style and great beatmaker, all together on one album. His lyrics are different from the others that are talkin' bout money, cars, and pimpin' them hoes. Which is what sets him a part. The humor in some of his songs are a nice additive to a great album.

Somehow, just knowing it was you that made this thread, I knew you would pick this album

I'm finding it hard to think of ideas though, I didn't get many albums released in 2004... So here's a rough list:

Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
Megadeth - The System Has Failed

...That's it

Am I the only person here who thinks that Iron by Ensiferum is the second best album in the universe, topped only by Ensiferum's self titled albom?

I've not bothered yet to listen to Ensiferum, so I cannot say. But considering NIN's Downward Spiral has been my favorite album for years, I doubt it'll change.

Meltdown by Ash is the greatest album of 2004. Heck, it's the greatest album to have come for at least 3 years. Ash's "punkiest" album so far, and their best. Evil Eye, Orpheus, Meltdown, Clones, and Starcrossed are all great songs. The rest also rocks, not a single "dull" moment on the entire album.

i cant decide so they both are my choices for the album of the year in your opinion...

but if thrice gets their 4th album out before the end of the year, thats my new choice for album of the year.

Hells yeah, oniblade. Ashes of the Wake kicks ass. It's good to have some decent American metal for a change. It's making a comeback.

New Wave of American Heavy Metal!

I'm going to say that album as well. It rules. Not too long before I see them too.

Also, what wite said. The System Has Failed was such a surprise this year. After the last couple of Deth albums, I thought the band was reduced to popish radio music forever. But Dave snapped out of it and put out one hell of a piece of plastic. It's good to get back to your roots.
Funny thing about it though, is that it was suppose to be a solo album. But he still owed Sanctuary one more album. So he slapped the Megadeth name on it.
This is supposedly the last Megadeth album. After this, Dave Mustaine is going to start his solo career. And seeings how TSHF kicks ass, I can't wait.

Arg, I've been wanting to hear the new Shadows Fall one, but I just haven't been able to get around to it yet. I need to do that, and soon. I've heard nothing but good about it and all the reviews say it's great.

EDIT: Holy fuck, I totally meant to mention Probot but I got sidetracked. I don't need to explain this album. Go buy it/download it/shoplift it/whatever now! NOW!

Machinae Supremacy - Deus Ex Machinae. An album that completly reignited my love for music and showed me that good stuff is out there if you look for it. Also Mansun's Kleptomania, because I owe this band everything; my name, my faith and getting me out of my teenage years still smiling.
