And so...I went to go see this movie in the theater... A remake of a "classic"? Mmph, whatever. Just went to go see it. It was kinda snazzy...but at the same time it really kinda sucked. Some horror movies (although THIS was more like a comedy) are known for having witty dialog, Dawn of the Dead does not have such. And I could not help but think that the screenplay was very poorly written overall. But...it gave me a good few chuckles and some cool moments. Best part was the quick flash of titties at the credits. Woo!

I just got back this night from seeing it as well. I was entertained. I thought there was some witty dialogue from what one asshole. It was worth my six bucks. My only problem was I kind of expected more revelation, or a globalized perspective. It was very skewed.

I liked it, but I haven't seen the original, so I can't tell you how it measures up. True, it does lack a little on the wit, but a little bit in the credits caught my eye:

Instead of the usual "Any similarities to any persons live or dead are purely coincidental", they changed it to "live, dead, or undead"

If you are interested, I talk about this a little bit in a thread further down the page. I'd recommend that you rent the original sometime if you can.

Just got back from seeing it. Here's my review:

OH HELL YES! Quite honestly, one of the better zombie flicks I've seen. Think of it like this...

Some Resident Evil looking people + 28 Days later style zombies and camerawork + some Evil Dead worthy gore effects + Tom Savini = Dawn of the Dead Remake.

Quite honestly, the inclusion of Savini wrapped the whole movie up in a neat little package for me. The only real complaint I could come up with was that it kept reminding me of 28 Days Later. It was like they took that movie, set it in America with a bigger budget, and let Tom Savini go hog wild on it.

In addition, some well placed post-apocalyptic zombie humor and a kick ass soundtrack (fans of the band Disturbed will get a kick out of it) makes for a great zombie flick. Even if you are just remotely intrigued by the genre, go see this movie! You won't regret it.

Jarukoth gives Dawn of the Dead 4 1/2 out of 5 boomstick shells.

Half the people that I talked to said it was dumb, the other half said it was awesome...so I dunno what to do.

I guess I'll have to see for myself.

Spoiler:
*Holds up a whiteboard that says "How about getting Rosie O'Donnel now?"*

Also, unlike RE and 28 Days Later, you don't know how or why everyone is undead. Very nice.

Edit: Fixed the spoiler tag. -N

As a fan of zombie movies, Dawn of the Dead is the second best in history (after the first Zombie! and Zombie Holocaust). So, I'll be the most critical of everyone here of this film

In retrospect, Dawn of the Dead was a really fun movie, and I'd like to go and see it again. Of course I enjoyed it the first time, but I think that a second would have me enjoying it even more.

One image I can't get out of my head is near the beginning, when that woman is driving away from her undead husband (those zombies are FAST, like Crimson Heads in Resident Evil), and he's chasing the car, but then you see him veer off to the side and attack some other woman on her lawn. Ha!

Over the last 10 years there has barely been a good zombie flick, RE was ok but nothing spectacular but Dawn of the Dead was great! I absolutly loved this movie. It had the occasional jumpy moment and like all other zombie movies it had the occasional funny part.

The ending was perfect as well, I just wish they would of explained what caused the people to turn into zombies

Overall a great movie, a movie I will be surely be buying when it comes out on DVD now hopefully RE2 follows in the footsteps of Dawn of the Dead and makes another great zombie flick.

In my opinion this is the best non-Romero made zombie movie ever. While nothing could be better than the original, it does a good job of setting the example for a new age of zombie movies. After that piece of crap House of The Dead (which I only rented to laugh at), I wasn't expecting much from this one. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this re-envisioning of Romero's idea is everything I could want and more. Much more action-packed and fast-paced that the original, it did a good job of keeping me on the edge of my seat. Of course, if Romero had even half of the budget that Dawn 04 had, well!

The original is god. The remake...could have been better. The original was awesome, because Romero was doing it, and not some rookie who can't write.

I still don't come to understand how everyone comes to curse House of the Dead and love the Dawn of the Dead remake. I just don't get it.

Chris, get over it. You still can't get over the fact that they have nothing to do with each other besides the title. If you want to be mad at somebody, go be mad at the guy who sold them the title.

The original was good. The biker getting his blood pressure taken while the zombies run the mall. Then his arm getting torn off, and eaten.

How can a remake of DAWN 04 be good without Peter Washington, he was the best character of the movie, along with Roger DeMarco.

But the remake...it's just there.

Yeah, the ending had Fran and Peter flying away in the helicopter after Peter almost get's killed, and escapes by a hair.

Well, spoil it for them Chris! Just kidding. The original was the best of them, but the remake is good by itself. I wonder, if you had seen it with a different name, would it have seemed better to you. Anyone who has seen the original comes biased against this movie when they see it.

Who isn't biased towards remakes?

The fact of the matter is ALL remakes sucked pretty bad.

Must we continue billing it as a remake? It really has nothing to do with the original besides the name.
