I also posted this on my fleepa. I'd call it a blog, but apparently that word is associated with debates and opinions and stuff, according to Tom Brocaw. Or whatever.

Anyway, a half hour ago I caused a car crash. Well it wasn't my fault, but had it not been for me it never would've occured. I live very close to my school, so I walk home everyday. I cross this crosswalk that doesn't have stoplights, but you push a button and a yellow light flashes and I have to wait for cars to stop. It's not at all a big deal. Now let me use my artistic skills to explain this. Try to keep up.

Car C stopped for me, so I kept my eye on the lane next to it before stepping onto the street. Usually a few cars zoom by before one gets the picture and stops. I thought this was going to happen with Car A, the speed it was going it clearly showed me that it couldn't stop and should just drive on.
But no.
I don't know what the hell prompted her to stop in the middle of the crosswalk. What I assume happened is she was not paying attention, saw the car in the lane next to her stop, automatically assume someone's crossing without looking and stops herself. It's not possible for me to have been on the street at that moment because
a) If I was crossing, I would have been hit by her. She stopped in the middle of the crosswalk.
b) If she saw nobody crossing, she would not have stopped.
So she suddenly stops in the crosswalk, surprising Car Bbehind her who clearly didn't plan to stop (teenagers, whatever), so they tried to come to a quick halt. Failed. Rear-ended her.
At this point some other people waited to cross with me, so they're watching. Car C is STILL stopped, and the teens in Car B start to get out of the car. At this point I assume that they're not going to move from the crosswalk, but Car A had her own agenda (who, by the way, was driven by an adult woman). I run to get across, and she starts moving to get away from the accident, but stops because I'm in her way. She's angry. I don't care.
I look back, and I see the other people who wanted to cross wait until the accident clears up (I didn't see if Car C left or not). Now this is where I'm confused, what do I do? What is the proper car-crash etiquette for someone who's not involved? Should I have waited? If so, why were people wanting me to move? WHAT IS THE RULE.

Six words.

Pedestrians have the right of way. No matter what happens, you can't be held responsible for the actions of people who aren't smart enough to identify a possible conflict and avoid it. It's (I believe) illegal to just jump out into the street and hope to get hit, but if you were trying to cross the street and a car stopped for you, you can't be held responsible for people who don't look both ways before careening down the street.

Neko, it's not like I started to cross while watching the car zoom towards me, I was on the sidewalk the entire time.

I think you probably should have stayed to give a statement for good samaritan points (redeemable at your local TCBY) or something, but there were other witnesses, so meh.

In accidents drivers are usually the most guilty, at least that's how it's here. As long you didn't mean it, you should be fine.

And if anything, it's car B that is most "guilty" in this accident. Unless A really did a sharp break.

I would've just kept on walking. Dumbass drivers like that aren't really meant to be dealt with, especially if you've got several witnesses who could claim that they weren't paying attention. I had to deal with several just driving home tonight: One that was drunk and pulled right out in front of me in a 50 MPH lane without signal and without knowledge that I was REALLY REALLY close proximity to her. That was a stomp-on-the-brakes-beep-the-horn stop. Next, after pulling into another lane so that another car could have the pleasure of rear-ending said drunk we get a little ways up and the cars two cars ahead of me slam on their brakes and beep their horn because some lamer pulls out right in front of them...and SLOOOOOWWWLY and then bolts after passing those two. Then I've got the numerous cutoffs and turns without signalling...I mean...this was a BAD day for driving. It's like everyone in front of me took stupid pills before getting in their cars.

So no, you were right, it's just that the majority of idiots out there aren't fit to drive a car, or fly a plane, or pilot a sub...it's not a normal state of mind for those whack-jobs. If she's angry...so what? She should learn to drive...and I bet her insurance going up will be a GOOD reminder of that.

...Could you smell the booze from your car, Hiryuu?

You guys don't know about stupid drivers until you've seen Quebec. Oh my lord... I'm surprised half of these people received PERMITS.

Considering she came close to ramming the curb twice and was weaving in and out of lanes like it was no one's business, I didn't have to.

heh...well, at least this happened at a crosswalk...worse things could happen if you were jaywalking...

anyways, glad you are okay. Based on your picture, and what you described, it is going to be Car B's fault for the accident since it was the one who rear ended the person. After all, Car A's insurance company will say that Car B wasn't driving far enough behind...

Seriously though, I would have just kept walking. Not my fault, not my problem. People suck at driving. Especially in Virginia. You haven't seen nothing yet until you come here. Good god.

So I'm not the only one here to have to suffer through seeing that shit? There've been an unbelievable amount of bad drivers anywhere I've lived in VA... Virginia Beach, Woodstock, Winchester....

Well you can't do THAT...

I'd keep walking as long as I knew nobody was injured - then that *might* be a good time to call 911 or get someone to help. But I'm not going to get involved in a discussion about insurance or a fist-fight. No sir.
