Above. Just curious to see what you think of it. If you know what it is, don't tell. I'm planning to do a little article on this later based on this response.

I pretty sure I've heard of it, but I can't remember where. Hell, I can't remember what it is.

I've heard the technical jargon before, but its overall meaning escapes my limited scope of knowledge.

That's precisely why I'm doing this. To most people, RSS is extremely useful once you learn it. But noone ever shows you what it is. They stick those buttons on their pages and expects everyone to know what to do. Everyone instead clicks the button and up comes some completely illegible (to these people) XML. Scared, they click the back button, and that's the end of that.

Hi mom.

I never saw the use of it really. I had it at one point and I think I know what it does but in very shallow laymen terms.

Casa uses RSS and I just started getting into it this weekend - Thunderbird has a decent little RSS interface that'll likely get better over time.

It's neat, I guess - fun to just be able to browse new posts on blogs with one click instead of going to each of them manually.

I don't have an external program for "receiving" news installed, even if often-visited pages, like www.heise.de for me, offer RSS newsfeeds ... I just do it the old way and check for news by going to the page directly

Edit Almost forgot, since I have already Thunderbird installed, I already have a RSS reader ... see Colleen's post above. Maybe I'll try to get used to it some day, but I'm too lazy

I have no fricken clue what this is. Perhaps google will help. On the other hand I also had no idea what SSH was earlier this year, and I felt really behind the times with the tech scene once I figured out what it was.

You need the latest version of Thunderbird though (0.8) because that's where the support was introduced.

File -> New -> Account. Simple from there.

That's hilarious because it's an apt description of the first reaction I had to an RSS feed. Granted, it didn't really scare me because I'd heard of XML before, but I was indeed confused.

I understand that RSS is useful because it sends updates in a format that the receiving client can parse and display however it wants to, but all I've done with it so far is subscribed to the Waffle RSS feed so I can see its updates on my LiveJournal friends page.
