Is anybody else here into No Wave? After finding a copy of No New York at a thrift shop (vinyl, $0.40 instead of $100) I've been getting more interested in this style. I like how the musicians were experimenting with new song structures, tonalities, and ways of playing their instruments. Listening to this stuff has made me analyze song structures even more and rethink the possibilities of the guitar.

So far I've been listening to James Chance & The Contortions, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Mars, and DNA. I'm also considering buying a few Glenn Branca albums, but I'm not sure yet. I've been into Sonic Youth for a while as well, and they have a definite No Wave influence (Thurston Moore worked with Branca as a guitarist for some of his symphonies I hear), and Nirvana was definitely influenced by Sonic Youth... so in some strange way you COULD say that if it weren't for the No Wave movement, Nirvana would have sounded totally different.

Does anybody else have any suggestions for some good No Wave musicians?

A really snide part of me wants to say "you're missing the point here" or "there aren't any" or something.

But the truth is I don't know because my allegiences in that era and location tends more towards the Talkings Headses, the Televisions, and the Blondies of the era.

(whines)

Best I've gotten thrifting was Mission of Burma and some Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers.

Anyway, I do love me some Sonic Youth, but that's all I know of. Might have to get me some of whom you've mentioned (and then beat down whoever put out that comp with the tweaked version of that album's title).

Well yeah, I know that pretty much all of the people involved with the No Wave movement had no formal training or anything at all, but there's no denying that there's "listenable" noise and unlistenable noise. Some of those bands had definite talent, they just used it in different ways. Mars was probably the loosest sounding band out of them all, where the instruments didn't really seem to go at the same pace as eachother, but it worked to great effect. Teenage Jesus & The Jerks was extremely abrasive sounding at first, but after a while you'll notice the stuff comes together tighter than you thought at the first listen.

And Jay, do you mean that comp with the fuckin' Strokes or whatever on there? I'm not really into that sorta stuff either.

Yeah, that one (Yes New York). I do like that style, but it's still a dumb idea for the title. (And hey, if you hate the Strokes, are they that bad if they get one person into Television?)
