Wow...just downloaded Firefox...so far, my only beef is that layouts and pictures tend to load slower than IE.

Okay, this isn't for me...say bye bye....especially since my comp started to act up right after the install, like the task bar vanished.

Give it time, Anya.

At the very least, use an IE frontend that'll save you a lot of the hassle that comes from IE.

Anya: As soon the layouts are in the Cache, the layouts load faster than IE.

Well, you can install Firefox 1.0 over 0.9, however you couldn't install 0.9 over 0.8 before without problems.

And the only pages that starts acting up is usually a few Microsoft page. And Firefox not supporting ActiveX is good, becuse who is using that apart from Microsoft themself?

...and I find it intresting that people working at Microsoft uses Firefox.

Slate magazine (owned by Microsoft) even promoted Firefox on their website in an article. They recommended Firefox over IE.

I'd get 1.0 if it weren't for the word "preview release" Feels so much like a beta, and I wanna upgrade when they get the final 1.0 release out

And as Kitten Yiffer said, Firefox do load things quicker, atleast that's what it seems like on my comp, it doesn't stop the whole page because one layout is slow etc, it just has to get everything into the cache which takes like, 10min of board surfing

Version 1.0 is expected to be released in a month and will be the first non Preview release of Firefox, AFAIK.

All versions up till now have been Technology Previews (note: not beta) but have been for the most part very stable. I wouldn't say that they were "beta" versions of software... that's more the nightly builds that fit that category... each release of Firefox has been a fairly polished technology preview.

Now they must be getting close to giving it the 1.0 number and releasing it as a full fledged product. I look forward to it.

I must say that Firefox works pretty well. I especially like the popup-killer function....

I hope that version 1.0 will be 2 times better...

And there's no screwing up the browser using outdated extensions or themes anymore
The extension manager refuses to install extensions, if the version doesn't support the newer one (as long the extension is programmed right and a version stamp checks the browser's version, comparing it with the ones the extension support(s)).

My Firefox1.0 FR is slightly buggy, it opens external links, such as from posting on phpBBs in a new window than a tab - and I checked Firefox _should_ open them in a new tab
But the good old middle-click - opens in new tab - still works; I only need to wait when the "Single Window" extension will be optimized for 1.0, then trap links will be opened in new tabs anyway

And Firefox even can be tweaked - a tool named Mozilla Optimizer makes some slight changes inside the browser, like enabling pipelining mode, so you'll notice a remarkable speed up - even for dial up users. These changes can be done by hand of course (simply create a user.jr file inside the profile folder and put in the changes), but the tool is more convenient; and if a problem occurs, it even removes all done changes

Very interesting downloads, however I use Opera, which I find to be, although banner-ads abound, much more simple and far superior to FireFox. The irony of the former statement is that along with Opera, I have FireFox as a back-up.
I agree. Except my backup is IE, only because when I did try Firefox it was actually almost as slow as IE (yes, even after a few days, with all those cache options and the such on) and the fact a new version got released the day after I waited an hour for it to download didn't help much, either.

It took longer than Opera to start up (it's very, very noticeable on a slower computer, thanks) and just overall (while monitoring the speed) slower (Opera averages around 3.8kb/s, Firefox about 2.9) ...

I don't know, mabye when 1.0 comes out I'll give it another try, but I'll stick with Opera's rediculously large amount of features like, uh... well... here, I'll just go off of Chibitaryn's post:

* LESS SPYWARE: Firefox/Mozilla don't use the ActiveX technology, which is the technology in Internet Explorer that most spyware/adware uses to get onto your computer. Simply not having ActiveX means you don't get as much spyware!

* SECURITY FEATURES: As well as having no ActiveX features, Firefox has additional security features, including Cookie blocking, to further protect you against spyware and other nasties.

* POP UP BLOCKING: All Mozilla programs have Pop Up Blocking on by default

* TABBED BROWSING: Instead of opening new windows for links, you can open things in Tabs. One advantage of Tabs is that they load in the background while you continue reading the page you are on -- so when you are ready to read the page you have opened in a Tab, it is already loaded

* CUSTOMISABLE: With extensions, Firefox is as customisable as you like. There are additional security extensions that can block out banner advertising, for example, or others that customise the way your menus look.

There are tons of other features, but these are the ones that I find the most useful. Particularly the spyware killing ones. I don't like having ads and other nasties shoved in my face every time I go to a website.

Security's the biggest advantage of Firefox IMHO. Security alone makes the download of Firefox well worth it. Then you get other spiffy features as well, like Find-As-You-Type! WEEE

Security: Opera doesn't use ActiveX either, so that's one matched.
It also has a cookie manager and several options for that stuff, the manager allowing you to view the contents of any cookie and/or delete them at will

Popup blocking: Open all, open in background, open requested only, block all. 'nuff said.

Tabbed Browsing: Opera has that, too. Go figure. I also find how nice it is to open a new one (middle click on the tab bar, bang. New tab. Middle click on an open one, bang. Closed. Very handy.) and all kinds of other stuff.

Customizable: I've never looked at the Opera plugin page simply because I've never needed to. It's already got whatever I need.

Oh, yes. Lest we forget the almighty mouse gestures, the most handy feature I've ever seen (It's how I do everything-- down-right closes, up stops, up-down refreshes, down opens a new page, etc) and I can't live without it (literally. I keep fucking up IE by attempting to do them)

Yes, there are banner ads in the corner, but they're always small GIFs ( <10kb max) and never afe flash/musical/etc/etc/etc.

In short, use whatever works.

Couldn't you just crack Opera? I'm not encouraging it or anything but it's one way to get rid of the banners.

I'm of the belief every browser should be free anyways. Opera seems to be the one exception to the rule - but IE shells and Mozilla both have support for gestures.

I used to be a huge fan of Opera, but I haven't liked their recent versions, wheras I've really enjoyed using Firefox. That's why I switched

But Opera isn't quite the same thing as Firefox. Opera has *tons* of features, wheras Firefox is meant to be a relatively slimline browser -- so you only install the features you need. Both are incredibly customisable though

As for cracking Opera -- don't do it. I may not use Opera anymore, but I want them to be supported....
