I don't know where you're buying your switches. I've seen them go for under $20.

That's why I posted that. I would assume if he's asking that, he's too cheap to buy the game

I'm surprised at that comment. After dealing with some of the people that come on IRC and some of the NinjaAE types that sign up for the board, I figure you would have realized that there is no end to the things that some people dont know.

Ok, I need to step in as well.

Firstly, LAN is just a term people use to describe the a collection of two or more computers connected in a way that allows them to transfer data from one to another. Both are usually in the same same "subnet". You don't really need to care about the subnet part unless you get into netowking in detail. Also, you do not need DHCP to setup a LAN. I don't know where that idea came from, all you need are unique IP's to the PC's. First of all, Windows assigns a non-routable IP if there is no DHCP server available on your connection. And secondly, it's easy as pie to set the ip yourself. Just make sure that each IP you set is different. If you want to play WC3 on a LAN... You have one of two choices.

1) Setup your own LAN. Requires a HUB, more than 1 computer, and both computers have to have a Network Card and 2 cables to go from each PC to the HUB (usually Cat-5)

2) Grab one of the free tools on the net that allow you to creeate a virtual LAN over the net, such as lancraft, or battlelan. They have instructions that should tell you what you need to doin order to play a warcraft 3 game using the LAN option.

Hope this helps.

okay I think we are missing the point of the thread though

to play on battle.net you just need an internet connection

to play like in a house, THEN you need to setup a LAN....

which yeah... requires nothing more than a star topology networking device, hub, switch, etc....

ethernet cards and cables

and assigning ip's to the machines
