I stumbled upon what I later learned to be an FF1 ROM and an old version of NESticle one bright day in the middle of the night in 2000. took it from there.

Three words: Zophar, Emunews, Nesticle.

The fact that the latter could run on my 486/25 at full speed didn't hurt matters either. Heck, I ran Lufia 2 on that thing at 3-4 FPS on ZSNES.

Ah, irony. We all love it, especcially when it's as nice as this.

As for me, a friend of me told me. Then he gave me some disks with NESticle and a few games (SMB, mega Man 1, 2 and 3, Zelda 1 and 2, Tiny Toons 2 and TMNT.)

That was before I discovered save states though. But I did beat MM3 without them.

Back in 2001, I didn't know what emulation was. I had heard the word, but not known its significance. ("So one thing acts like another. Bah.")

Then, I was looking for something. A level editor for Mario games. I had no idea where to look. I was hoping for some kind of PC program for that (like Zelda Classic, only for Mario games).

One day in the summer of 2001, I was looking at a Mario website (The Mushroom Kingdom, for those who've heard of it), and I saw an Emulation section in the left pane navigation bar thingamabob. Below it...saved games, non-commercial roms...wait a minute...level editors. It was only Mario Improvement, but I downloaded it anyway and proceeded to hunt out the emulator, rom, and patching tool. I never found a rom that worked with MI, so I never used it.

Then I found Acmlm's.

Nintendo Power article from 1998?

I have some old NP's from then around here, and I can't recall an article about that... Probably happened when I stopped subscribing to it, but back then the only thing I can think of that would spur such an article is UltraHLE.

I believe I was searching google for info on some Snes games, and I got a rom site, and just downloaded one, and then it had a readme that said I needed an emulator so I did a search for emulator and thats about it.

Back in late 1998 - early 1999, I wanted to play the old Super Mario Bros. game on the PC (I had Windows 95 and 100 MHZ at the time), so I did a search for Mario for the PC and I came across something called Nesticle with one of the screenshots of the Mario game running on the PC. So I grabbed a copy and realised it also needed something called a ROM, so I searched and grabbed that too, and later on, I found Acmlm's Rom Hack Domain in 2001.

Not 100% sure it was '98, but it was around the time of Pokemon (Red & Blue)'s release because I remembered the letter dealing with people mention if playing the new Pokemon game online with this thing called "emulators" was legal or not. I can't remember... I'll search all my old NP's from that era for the letter reply and scan it for you all.

Back in 2001/2002 I downloaded an emulator called Hive that emulated 52 classic arcade games, found the roms from various places on the internet, and fooled around with renaming Ms.Pacman files to change the graphics.

Bleem!
I first got a computer, then the internet, and visiting video game sites, I read an article about Bleem! Playstation emulator. Play Playstation games on my computer? NO WAY!
On those boards, I was General Leo, and chatted with Randy Linden, PJ, and so many other cool people, who taught me emulation. They even sent me a free Bleem! T-shirt, which I still have to this very day.

Back in 1997 or 1998, I saw people at school play Excitebike on a PC (with Nesticle), but I didn't know it was emulation back then ... it wasn't until September 1998 that I really got into emulation, when someone gave me Snes9x 0.24 (DOS) and a FF6 ROM I went through FF6, then started looking for more ROMs, and later expanded to NES and the rest ...
