This is a turn up for the books I'm moving into some new rented housing next week, but, due to landlord's being pricks I've had to rent it since july. Anyway, I'm moving in with 4 other people, all of whom I thought were pretty ok.

And, well, it turns out most of 'em are. Apart from one. Who's had a friend of her staying in my room (that i'm paying rent on and haven't even spent more than 4 hours in yet) all summer, without even bothering to ask me. Of course, I found out from a friend there who's alright, just found out, and is a bit shocked at all this too. Anyway, I've just booked coach tickets to head up there tomorrow (by a remarkable twist of fate, there's a party on in Sheffield too tomorrow night, rather timely I though). With a sleeping bag (no bedding up there, unless i can kindly use theirs?) and lock to fit to the door in tow.

While it takes a lot to annoy me, and a lot more to get me going half-way across the bloody country at the drop of a hat, I'm one to hold grudges too. But, I know that may create more than a bit of tension. While I think they deserve whatever hellfire I can unleash, hell, I wouldn't mind some f*cking rent back, anybody got any advice for dealing with this in a tactful manner?

*sighs in relief of venting*

My friend Dan just went through this.

One of the roommates had a buddy stay in his room when he was away. The guy left about 2 grand worth of stuff in the house. As compensation, he sold it in a big ol' yard sale.

Are you talking about living in someone else's room or selling someone's stuff who lived in yours, Kallias?

Hmm, I'll see what happens when I get there. We've got a pretty good student's union here, and I've some friend on the executive (not just neil tomo!), so if it gets icky I'll see about taking legal action through them. Would much rather it didn't get that far, just make a small example and have done with. It's an attic room, so right now I'm thinking of throwing some of the stuff out the roof-light and leaving the rest dumped on the stairs. *shrugs* Leaving in about 40 minutes, so we'll see what happens

You were paying rent, so I don't see how that entitles anyone else to be in the room you're renting.
Demand a compensation for it, that's the least they can do. They as in that roommate and person who stayed in your room, not the landlords.
Though the next step would be contacting them and explaining to them you couldn't use your room yet because someone else was staying in it on your unknowing back.
