It doesnt have too much of a point... If the newbies want t make a welcome post, then we could just have a Sticky in general chat for that, but alot of users use the n00b threads as an excuse to say something general like "Welcome, blank, to Acmlm's! Follow the rules" and reply something like that to every post...

Maybe the Newbie Forum really makes no important sense, but I think it was here since the beginning; and it is another feeling to have his "own" thread instead to share one with many other people Also you can check for new replies quicker than scrolling a thread with 200 or even more pages for example. So I'd rather go with keeping it ... it got part of the board, as other forums in other messageboards grew also |

I think it is needed, but maybe the replies should be limited to Admins and Mods. Most users only respond for higher post count. At least that is the way it is with most people. Maybe there are some good natured people that actually want to welcome them, but the faults of the few cause the people to suffer.

Seems a bit much to get rid of an entire forum. Some people like to welcome, wether they genuinely want to or not. To close the forum is basically like shutting down Modern Art from having comments in, and HSD would be out of her newbie-welcomming job, so no.

My first 5-6 posts were in the newbie forum. At first I was overwhelmed by the board, and if it werent for my thread in the newbie forum, I wouldnt of stuck around. It is a good place to start, so why should keep it.

Newbie forum wasn't there since beggining. It was created because too much newbie threads were filling up General Chat (as far as i remember).

I don't think the newbie should be gotten rid of. However, the following need to be changed in order for it become less spammy: (1) When a person makes a newbie thread, the user is required to introduce themselves and tell a little bit about themselves. If not, at least a little bit more than just a simple "Hi, I'm new." and that's it. If a user somehow throws out a topic in there, perhaps the quality of the posts that the other users make while replying can get a little bit better. Which bring me to the next one. . . (2) It gives some people an excuse to get a "free" post in that thread saying the same thing in every newbie thread -- "Welcome to Acmlm" and nothing else. The users that respond to the "newbie" in that thread sometimes have conversations in there -- most of the time just a few words. This includes the newbie posting back and saying "Thank you for welcoming me" for every person that replies in that thread -- and that should be stopped. (3) Close the thread that a newbie has made so that a person doesn't "bump" those threads after a certain length of time. By then, that user should know the rules and wouldn't be a newbie. Did we have less newbie threads before that forum was made? I can't remember...if it was b/c Gen Chat was being flooded with them or not. Anyway, I think one Newbie sticked thread would be nice. Person can say hello, say a few things and that would be that.

Thats what the ACS was about, but it turned into a chat thread. WIth the single stickied newbie thread, I could see that happening. Take a look at the size of the threads in the newbie section(or think of the ones on the previous board), now all those together would be too good. If several newbies arrived at once, one might get tuned out and already feel unaccepted, causing him/her to leave. By letting them post a thread and having several people reply lets them feel accepted.
