I was wondering if anyone knew of any scary games. Seeing as I want to play the scariest game made. If anyone knows of such a thing I'd like to know.

The first resident evil was kinda scary. Other than that, no games really scared me.

I own the remake of Resident Evil and even though I barely played it (seeing as I don't really like the controls at all). It wasn't scary.

Bah. Silent Hill >>> Silent Hill 2. The only thing Silent Hill 2 had going for it was Pyramid Head.

I thought that game for GCN was kinda scary, but no game really scares me.

ETERNAL DARKNESS. I knew I would remember the name by the end of the post.

I've played Enternal Darkness for a bit and it didn't scare me. I've watched my bro play it farther than me and it still wasn't the least bit scary.

The original Silent Hill is the scariest in the series. I could barely stand to watch a friend go through the sewers, let alone do so myself. I played it years ago and never made it past the first area because it sawed on my nerves so badly. I've since bought it and am trying to get up the guts to actually play this time.

Silent Hill 2 didn't frighten me as much. Its radio wasn't nerve-grating like the one in Silent Hill, it had some good background music (unearthly moans, sick industrial whines, and other fun stuff) but nothing matching the sheer terror of Devil's Lyric, and there weren't any garden-variety enemies that attacked from overhead or didn't set off the radio. (One reason the Silent Hill sewers are so frightening is that your radio doesn't work and there are enemies lurking above, so a monster might swipe at you from the ceiling and scare the crap out of you.) Still, it was disturbing enough that I had to talk myself into picking up again if I took a break from playing it. Pyramid Head is partially to blame for that.

Silent Hill 3 really isn't that scary, but it is more difficult than the other two. I generally didn't have serious trouble on Easy mode, but I had to be much more careful with supplies than I did in the original Silent Hill. Silent Hill 4 is the least freaky of all (it's rather spooky, tense, and disturbing, but that's about it), but it evidently has a very sharp and nasty difficulty spike halfway through. That's what's keeping me from playing it any more for the time being.

The only way Eternal Darkness is scary is if you suck at it. When your insanity meter gets to that point because of how badly you're playing, THEN the messed up stuff starts happening.

Thief: The Dark Project/Thief Gold creeps me out. That's a game to play late at night, with the lights down, and with headphones on (the game is always best with headphones). Dark game...really dark. Awesome environments, scary supernatural stuff. Can't say much more...but look into it. It's a pretty old PC game, from 1998. But it's one of my top 10 favorite games. It's kind of like a first-person shooter, only it's medieval, you use stealth (hide in the shadows, make quiet treads across loud surfaces, extinguish torches with water arrows), you have a blackjack and a sword, and it's best if you don't kill any humans. If you get like 3 guys attacking you, you're screwed, 'cos there's no way you can face all of them at once. So instead, sneak past 'em or knock 'em out, pick up their bodies, and hide them places where others won't spot them! Oh yeah, and you gotta steal a lot of loot, from mansions to bone hoards. Fun!

Definitely a game worth looking into if you're into stealthy first-person games and scary things...oh yeah, and great atmosphere and art. (GodDAMN, is it ever an arty game...) Games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex were heavily based off this. The Gold version is perhaps better, as it's got some extra levels which are fun, as well as some additional secrets in levels that're in the original, and other things like that.

And if you end up liking that, get Thief II: The Metal Age as well. There's also a new one, Thief: Deadly Shadows, which you can play on either PC or Xbox. Fun game, though definitely my least favorite of the 3. Didn't have much of the spooky stuff, which is disappointing...but still pretty scary at parts.

Oh, and it's just after typing up this whole post that I went back to look at all the rest of the posts and saw someone already mentioned Thief...but oh well, I hope this post is informative and piques your interest. Thief: The Dark Project is way scarier than any Silent Hill or Resident Evil games (the latter of which 97% of the time relies on startling you, making you jump...the first game was way better when you were lead to think it was a supernatural thing, and not some dumb virus).

I've played pretty much every Resident Evil, and I've played Silent Hill. The only game that's ever truly terrified me is Doom 3. This game has had me on the edge of my seat, it's that scary for me. ome people might not find it scary at all, that's fine, but I think it's the scariest game I've ever played.
