| I've got the wierdest idea ever... What if somebody made a Rom hacking Wiki where people could add hacking information about any game to any system? The idea could be a great success or a big mistake. Nothing else. Good: If lots of people use it and adds info, it could easily become the biggest Rom Hacking information source ever. Ways to make it good: Lots of "advertising" on other large rom hacking forums. Good Wiki system. Make sure that people add enough info to make it interesting Some other stuff... Bad: Maybe only a few are adding info/reading, which would make the system pointless. Ways to make it bad: Anything else. I'm not saying that I am/somebody are going to do it. I would just like to say it in case somebody would think that this is a good idea and make it. Comments? |

| Dunno. I'm always inclined to believe that some dumb asshole would add incorrect information. Perhaps a more privately managed wiki would be more appropriate. One where you have to register to see and use it, and can be banned for posting crap that is incorrect. | |||

Yeah, I had this idea a while back. I've got a basic wiki running on my website, but it's not really meant for a public website though. Because the wiki software that's running is crap. (MediaWiki would probably be the best wiki software to use, as it can be set up to only allow registered people to edit, and it has rollback features. Plus it's what Wikipedia is run on  ) Plus, I'm a lazy bastard like Gavin said. But I think it's a great idea, even if only one or two people contribute it could still work out great. |

| It's never work. Well, it might for you guys... but from my past experiences with people from other communities, something like this has never worked. There will only be a few competent people providing useful information, while other people sit back and soak up all the data that's been discovered. Eventually, those that were actually doing something won't have the time to continue and need to take a break. When that happens, it appears as if the site has gone completely dead; and people will stop contributing data. Unless you can get a massive amount of people to actually contribute, you'll fail miserably. |

| the idea is good in theory, but i dont expect you'll get enough contributions. many people(including myself) like to keep stuff they found out for themselves, especially if said stuff was hard to figure out. a collection of all memory locations-threads on acmlm would be nice, however. |

| Actually, an EggVine wiki is in the works, as in it's in place but won't work as advertised. I'll keep you posted, and if it works out I promise to set up an ordinary hacking wiki too. Who knows, if I have, say, seven hours that I'm not doing anything on I might set up mediawiki too. |

| Yeah that would be great, especially for Eggvine. Now people won't find the same offsets and such over and over again. But at least, make accounts required (with e-mail confirmation) or something. I don't want people to clutter in the ROM hacking wiki.  |

| I think that a wiki great idea. Just make sure that it has a rollback function and a good change tracking system. What I don't like is the general paranoia and stinginess expressed in some of the other posts in this thread. A new piece of information or a new technique can only be used improve a few hacks if it is kept private, but if it is made public, many hacks can be improved. I consider favoring the former to be stupid and contemptible. |

| We're not the first ones to come up with the idea of a ROM hacking wiki. There was a discussion on the romhacking.com forums last spring and a test wiki was set up. According to the linked page the database could be moved to a better server if people started using it. Perhaps it would be a good idea to see if that wiki is still worth posting to. On the other hand, an installation of MediaWiki would provide better service than just about any other wiki software. |

| Actually, I really think this is a great idea. There are a lot of games that people probably have data and memory locations stashed away for. I personally have a lot of stuff buried away for a few games I was working on. Its almost sad that if someone posts a thread like "Anyone have any information for game x" there may be a good chance someone else will respond with something stashed away that no-one knew about before. A Wiki would allow for everyone to add their own stuff to a central location for everyone to go to. Not a bad idea at all. I really don't understand what is up with alot of people's additude about not sharing or what they found out. It only hurts everyone. I know of and even have several very awesome utilities for a few games which were abandoned by their authors, and I'm not even supposed to mention anything about them. I'm talking really good stuff like a music editor, and a level editor for a snes games that would make everyone here go, woah! Of course, I respect the authors' wishes even (leaking isn't cool!) though I don't agree with it because I believe everyone should share everything, especially if it was abandoned. This community should be about sharing everything. This is why any editor or utlity I make is going to be open source (unless I'm really embarrassed about the source for some reason).
