Does a Fat Virus Cause Weight Gain?

Is fat contagious? A Virginia scientist thinks it might be and wants to test our blood for a fat virus.

Virginia physician and scientist Richard Atkinson, who is president of the American Obesity Association, has set up a new lab in Richmond called Obetech designed to test human blood for a fat virus, reports The Washington Post.

Before you laugh, know this: There is such a virus in chickens. And weirdly, the chickens that are infected are much fatter but have lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels than chickens that are not infected. Atkinson and Nikhal Dhurandhar have identified a similar "fat virus" that they say is "quite common in humans." It's called adenovirus (AD) 36. Atkinson's lab test costs between $125 to $150 and results take a few weeks.

Even if our weight gain is caused by a fat virus, eating less and moving more are still the best way to fight obesity. But understanding why we get fat, why some people can carry the extra weight with minimal health impact, and how to predict which slender twentysomethings will have a beer belly by age 45 are questions that intrigue scientists.

Atkinson and Dhurandhar injected the AD 36 fat virus into healthy animals and noticed it caused them to become fat compared with control groups that did not receive the injection. Washington Post reporter Sally Squires writes that just like Dhurandhar's chickens, the infected animals had blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels that remained lower than those in uninfected animals.

Since they can't inject a virus into human beings, the team screened blood from obese Americans and people of a healthy weight. They specifically looked for a previous AD 36 infection by hunting for antibodies against the fat virus. They found that about 30 percent of the obese participants had antibodies against AD 36, compared with 10 percent of the healthy-weight control subjects. Once again, those who had AD 36 also had significantly lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels than their uninfected counterparts.

The idea that a virus might be partly responsible for weight gain "is sort of a fringe idea as opposed to a cutting-edge idea," Steven B. Heymsfield, deputy director of the St Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Obesity Research Center in New York, cautioned The Washington Post. "But Doctors Atkinson and Dhurandhar have done their homework. There's nothing to suggest that their observations are not valid to this point."

Atkinson is quick to point out that having the fat virus does not mean you will definitely become obese, but if you find out you have been infected before you have gained a lot of weight, it will alert you to be cautious.

this is creapy. i saw this on one of those pop up things that says the news when u go on aim, or aim express

As you mentioned somewhere, the best way to maintain a healthy weigth is to not neccesairly eat less, but eat healthier, and to excercise more.
If that movie about the guy eating McDonald's for a month (Supersize me) contains anything even close to the truth, Americans should change their lifestyle rather than secretly hoping they can blame a virus.
I'm not saying that will happen, but it's in people's nature to put the cause of their problems outside of themselves.

Of course if you only eat McD's and not work out, of course your're going to gain weight.

My mother gained a lot of weight when she had me, and I know that it's in the family, my mom's side for the most part, to be a bit heavy. I've been trying my hardest to not be like her. I still usually eat what I want, but in moderation, add in a few salads and fruit here and there, a shit load of water and juice, plus excercise. Been doing good for me thus far.

He actually did it as an experiment to show the average American's calory intake and the excercise they had daily.
He showed it in a pretty funny way by explaining that he had to use a cab at a certain point, because he reached the mileage people averagely walked daily.

Super Size Me is a great movie xP. I'm actually going to try to eat no McD food at all, it's not like the choice between free food and not-free food is THAT hard.. if you're cheap like me x). I'd much rather have them test people for a stupidity virus though.. I have this feeling they might just find something .

I agree, there's no way I'd choke down a McDonald's burger nowadays. Back before I started losing weight, I remember I'd eat at fast food chains constantly. When I stayed at my father's house, he'd get McDonald's breakfasts. When my mother was too late to cook a healthy dinner, she'd get us food from Burger King. And I'd always eat it, all of it, all of that fat and grease and oil and salt, and I didn't think twice about it. Nowadays I can't even stand to look at a fast food burger without getting sick.

I read a few articles - swedish, for once, it's coming here appearently - about "Supersize me" today, and a few thoughts struck me:
  • Eating fat food at an "ordinary" restaurant is every bit as dangerous as on McDonald's. I could see the danger with McD being cheaper though.
  • Fast food is not meant to be had for lunch and dinner multiple days in a row.
  • Did anyone expect a person eating fast food for lunch and dinner for 30 days to not degrade physically?
  • When do we see the follow-up, wherein he survives on McD's healthy alternatives? Or do we not, because it's not sensationalist material for the part of the population who didn't expect a person eating fast food for lunch and dinner for 30 days to degrade physically?

To kinda add on what was said here... 20 years ago we never had this much of problem, getting somthing to eat from McD's was a treat for people in the past, now its like its the only place you can get a good dinner....

I think people are just to damn lazy to cook something themselfselves.

I generally do eat alot, but I'm not overweight. When I do eat, its usually healthy food.

btw, didn't McD's get rid of the "supersize" option?

I must have a terminal case

I'm fat because I don't excercise enough, nor, paradoxically eat enough, this means I put weight ON because my body thinks i'm fasting when really I've only the apetite for one meal a day and so only have the energy for 3 1/2 hour workouts a week, that's not enough.

My body likes me... Sorta.

I eat tons more than any of my friends, when I have the chance. And I'm the one that weight 110 pounds, 5'4" and 15 years old.

Sorta odd... Oh well.

My body still degrades physically pretty easily, just doesn't put on any pounds.

Yes and no. A lot of the chain installations did get rid of it. I suspect in places where health concerns are part of the public consciousness, such as large to medium cities. However, I was in southern michigan a while ago, which is not developed by any American standard, and they still had the supersize option in place. So probably in the more backwater areas no one gives a shit.

hmm... you might try taking the meal you eat and splitting it up into smaller meals throughout the day. I think my body has been thrown out of whack before from only eating 1 or 2 meals a day. Now I try to eat three meals but smaller in size.

...Fat virus?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is called "Insulin", and I think we've known about it for quite a while.
