heh...we are all educated enough to know not to use AOL, but to get people off of it is like saying to Americans to switch to the Metric system...

Yup. If it makes fucking sense to do something, then let's not do it. Such is the mind of some people. Sadly, a larger part of the general population than needed.

I'm all for the metric system. It's a lot better than what we call this piece of shit (12 -> 1, 3 -> 1? wtf?)

I just don't get it, we're using a shitty system that uses odd amounts for everything (8 ounces in a cup, or was that a pound?) as opposed to the nice and neat metric system (100 -> 10 -> 1, ah, my brain feels nice now)...

...

I think on eo fhte reasons AOL does so good is because it is so damn easy. There are no brains required to hit "SIGN ON STUPID" and then click "READ MY EMAIL CUZ IM DUM".

Arrgh. We're not getting cable today, either, but mabye this week. Damnit.

It's great for grandma's and some parents that get one email per quarter. Sadly, it's never to the benefit of anyone else in the same household. A better approach would be to just get a normal ISP and get some simple email programs for example.

Yeah, really.

Here's an interesting fact. AOL in 8.0 decided to add bluegrad.dll (or something) that would put a blue gradient in the back of AOL. It also creates shadows under windows.

It's one of the reasons that it requires a fucking HUGE 64MB of memory (plus!) and just takes up 40 MB RAM SITTING THERE.

God... I usally use AOL 5.0 (no-bullshit no-eyecandy connections) but at least in AOL 9.0 (de-)optimized they added the "AOL Dialer", which is nothing more than the AOL connection dialog. I suppose it's better than leaving open the bukly AOL program itself, but eh.

Not to mention AOL opens the "AOL Companion" when you connect, and it's a pain to get rid of. You close it but it comes back. After about 20 different options I finally found the damn thing.

It's almost as bad as MSN Messenger starting at boot and saying "YOU RUN PROGZ ATH REUEIR THIS DUR." ... I just overwrote it with another program I made that does nothing (cept give you an error message)

I say we all find AOL HQ, modify some clay pigeon shooters or some other weaponry to fire AOL CD's with sharpened edges and go have some fun

If only I could find that picture of that guy who made a giant fish picture with AOL free trial CDs...

It was a happy day when I got off AOL... We could all be online on different computers at the same time... WHAT A CONCEPT THAT IS!!!

Our current system makes a hell of a lot more sense than the metric system, though. With 12, lots of stuff goes in to it. It makes dividing by 3, 4, 6, etc. so much easier than it would be with 10 because it goes in to everything evenly. Meanwhile, 10 has... 5... And how the fuck often are you going to want to divide by 5? seriously. Only real advantage 10 has is that we have 10 fingers and 10 toes, so that's an easy counting system... For TODDLERS. I think we should all switch to a base 12 counting system. Sure, some people would complain, but screw them.

And I still maintain that MSN Companion is a hell of a lot worse than AOL.

A relative: You've changed your password system without telling us to something our password doesn't work in so we can't connect, you've given us backup passwords that do nothing... WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

Them: You know, if you read the contract we don't actually guarantee service. *hangs up*

Go customer service!

Indeed.

I mean, I would like seeing prograrms for doing stuff like the AOL programs but much faster, and working with all ISP's. That would be great for inexperinced (and older) users.

Uhm.. that cache fake aol feature.. isn't it more like temp internet files than offline pages.

To whoever thought metric was bad and imperial was not and suggested we all use imperial: Have you ever run a 3d program or perhaps cad program? In the options you can usually select either American or International for measurement stuff.. so what does that mean? It mean there are about 6 billion people using metric and 300 million (or somewhere around that) using imperial.. I think we should vote .

Base 12 counting system is better than Base 10, yes, but since Base 10 is used in all of the world, the Metric System is better than the Imperial. The ideal situation would be to to have a Base 12-based Metric System, but that ain't going to happen, so out of the two used systems, Base 10-Metric and Base 10-Imperial, Metric > Imperial.

Well damn. I have nothing useful to say in response to that, but I can't just say nothing because not acknowledging the point of another in the same discussion would be rude... So... Uh... I agree.

Since our counting systems are by convention in base 10, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to use a base 10 metric system. I'm guess I'm failing to see your point, other than that a base 12 counting system is more efficient to write down than a base 10 system. Let's make sure we're on the same page. The "imperial" system is the same as the english system, as in inches, feet, yards, gallons, etc, right? If so, then what is "Base 10-imperial" supposed to mean? Just the fact that we (Americans) use base 10 to count and use it with the imperial system? :|

Now, for us programmers and rom hackers, a hexadecimal metric system might be nice. In fact it would rule. "I would like 1B Liters of gas please."

Imperial is the term for the old measuring system for which metric replaced mostly everywhere.. Base 10 imperial would mean using divisions of 12 for measurement, in base 10.
