My first attempt at a hack is near completion, and I want to get some opinions on some single-level palette changes I've made. Like them? Hate them? Suggestions?

I bet you couldn't tell it was a fire stage, eh? I think the BG might be a little bright, but I didn't have a problem with it when testing the stage.

A mountain stage, the colors are a bit odd but I like them.

A ghost cave. The thing I'm not sure about is the redone lava. I don't know what I was thinking at the time, but I don't hate it outright. Open to suggestions, of course.

Grasslands. Not much else to see here.

An icy palace.

Couldn't decide what color to use for the eyes of the Fuzzies, who are supposed to be electric sparks here. I just kinda picked one at random and kept it for a while.

Sky castle. I just recently changed it to a dark-BG level as I thought the FG and BG were a little too close in color.

Brief section of desert leading into a similarly-colored sandcastle-type palace stage.

Complain, praise, criticize, make suggestions, whatever. I'm hoping for a few people's opinions on this...

I love #1... The dots in the ground in number two could be darkened a bit, change the lava in #3, but keep it see-through, you got the "Haunted" thing good there. #4 is good, #5 is terrible, no offence, #6 is alright, though it'd reccomend using Exgfx to make the fuzzies look like sparks, #7's FG could use darkening, and #8 kicks ass.

Pic...

1. Way to red. Make the lava darker, and then make the BG even draker than the lava.

2. I think this one looks really good.

3. That BG is terrible. And why such a contrast between the ground and lava. Make the ground a redish brown and the lava dark red, maby blackish gray....

4. Looks good...empty but good.

5. OMG. sorry but this just looks bad...

6. Looks good, but use some ExGFX as well for the 'sparkies'. Rip the graphics from SMB2 for the sparkies or design your own. Even use the ones from SMW.

7. Looks good. This one would be mush better as ice instead of sky. Ice should have light blue and purple shades with few REALLY dark areas.

8. Best shot. When I first saw it I thought the ground was ExGFX, but its not. One palette change is make the gray dots on the ground a dark yellow orange.

Thanks for the feedback. Indeed, most of it is just the result of playing around with colors (though one I ended up saving as a non-custom palette, thankfully I only used it one or two other times). The ice palette was the one I actually liked least and planned to change anyway, I just wasn't sure which way to go with it. Hopefully it'll end up better. And I took a shot of the sandcastle interior after that post, here it is:

While not really a pallete problem, I'd use a different background. That with a sand palette just looks... Poor.

Mmm... they could actually be better...

1. WAY TOO RED.... tone it down a bit for a better effect.

2. Cant find anything wrong with it. Looks good

3. Green lava.... just

4. Perfect

5. Mmm... not exactly the best thing ever. Just a few touch ups will do.

6. No.... too much yellow.

7. BG, fine, FG, shield your eyes ... please tone it down.

8. Fine

9. Again, too much yellow.

Not bad, but could be better.

Well, it's better than I expected, so I can't complain.

Anyway, I spent some time with the suggestions given and have been able to deal with most of it. I ended up removing the "lava" from the ghost cave, as it wasn't really important anyway. Pits are every bit as fatal ;D

The changes I'm aiming toward but havent done yet include toning down the sand color in the last picture (now that I see them together, it's too yellow compared to the exterior sand) and slight changes to the ice/cloud stages. The ice palette is now almost identical to the one in the cloud picture, for which I have a change in mind that I stumbled upon. Once I'm finished I'll have shots of the significantly-changed ones...

You should really get into making levels with ExGFX. There are some very cool Files at the ExGFX workshop you could use. I ripped a cave Bg from YI that you could use. Juggling Joker made an amazing set that has happy theme to it. I can't wait to see the new shots.

#1... well, I ran immediately to the kitchen and got an iced coke when I saw this this just looks extremely hot. And is far the best of all the screens, imho. Just fix that black spots in the BG. kthx.

Next time around I plan on adding custom blocks, ExGFX, OW changes, and all that. With this one I just went with a level edit...

How do these compare?

The fire level with a darker BG.

The haunted cavem in a slightly less purpley palette.

Ice castle redone, I stole the palette from the original sky castle as a starting point.

The electric stage with a better look at the BG, plus a different style of Fuzzy since I'm still avoiding ExGFX for this hack...

Sky castle, now with a purple tint.

Later area of the sky castle I forgot to show earlier.

The sandcastle, now with a slightly less urinesque palette.

Commenting on the most recent post:=

1) Much better, though the lava is still too bright, the spikes should be slightly brighter, and the platforms should be darker.

2) What I can see is great, but I can't see much. You did change the lava back, right? The old colour was gross.

3) Would be perfect if everything were a bit darker.

4) Looks awesome. If you do get into ExGFX, I sugest making the lines thick and copper-coloured, like electrical wires.

5) Kinda bright, but pretty good.

6) Great, but the cloud is too bright, it clashes with the rest of the level.

7) The BG is way too bright and doesn't exactly fit a sand castle.
