First of all, I would like to thank Acmlm. U guys Rule! Anyway, I have a few questions about supermario discombobulator(3). First, I am having a major problem when level editing. Whenever I run a level on an emulator , it's CPU crashes. I think it has something to do with the number of enemies or something like that. (Please be patient with me. I'm new at this.) What can I do? Second, can anyone give me some legal information on hacking old roms? I know that many system roms are illegal, but the modification of old roms would in no way hurt the current gaming market. Your help would be appreciated! |

It is legal for you to back up your copy of any game you own. It is illegal to modify this copy (there may be some exceptions to this, such as for educational purposes, etc. I cannot vouch for the exceptions, however.). It is illegal to obtain someone else's backup of any game whose copyright was established in the last 75 years. For more information, visit Nintendo's copyright information website (yes, I know this is a Google link). (edited by Koroc on 08-27-04 04:37 PM) |

Hmmm... so why does this site even exist? Well, anyway its probably none of my business. I'm rather dissappointed though because I have always wanted to easily make a mario game. Darn that Nintendo!

Well, my opinion is that it's not illegal to keep a hacked Rom, since a hacked Rom is no longer the origional. Nintendo doesn't sell hacks, they only sell the real thing. So by making your own version of their game, it's no longer their design though it still is their origional "game". Confusing. Anyway, that's just what I believe. --Schwa |

ROMs are illegal to possess unless you dump them yourself or their non-commercial. Your hacked ROMs are no different, as the engine and other things still exist from the original. Distribution of ROMs is more illegal than possession, thus we use IPS files to send our hacks. Actually hacking a ROM is actually perfectly legal, unless you distribute it (once again, that's why we use IPS files, they only contain our changes) or claim the copyright. Of course, we don't all dump our own ROMs, so we're all scofflaws. Oh no. |

But wait, don't rom hackers do use roms for educational purposes? Some of us, like me, like to look at the rom and figure out how they did the things that they did. I mostly like to document data that I find, and do funny things with it.

That would still be illegal... It doesn't matter if you use it show your younger brother 2+2, you technically can't do it under the law.

That's an interesting point. Wouldn't it only be legal if we went to Nintendo and got a copy for educational purposes though?

Nintendo would need to sign a contract allowing the person use of the ROM for the desired reason. But nintendo does not care about these, or esle there wouldn't be easy to find ROM sites anywher you look. As long as no money exchanges hands, I'm pretty sure they don't give a damn about it. |

ROMs are illegal to have on your computer whether it be downloaded or copied yourself and that's the bottom line. Modifying copywritten material, however, is still kind of in the grey area: look at music remixers. Distributing an IPS patch that modifies a ROM seems perfectly legal at this point, else Nintendo would have shut thus place down long ago. As for your problem: do you have any objects that extend to the ground? If so, is there a ground under them? (the normal ground, not just any object). |

Another tricky point about those objects that extend to the ground: it's not mentioned anywhere, but the object number for the ground has to be lower than the object number for the object that goes to the ground. Most, but not all, of the objects go in order from left to right, so the safest way to handle it is to get an object from the end of a level to use as the object that reaches for the ground, and to make the ground an object from the beginning of the level. |
