So let's see if I have this straight...

Phase 1 - Notice that the iPod, a sleek, sophisticated-looking piece of nicely-functioning hardware with a simple and easy-to-use interface, is selling very well.
Phase 2 - Jump on the coattails of said iPod's success by peddling a fugly plastic computer.
Phase 3 - Profit!

Phase 2 really ought to be replaced with ????? because it makes no sense whatsoever. I could see this computer being marketed as an iMac competitor, but an iPod and an entire computer are not the same thing at all, and that computer doesn't even resemble an iPod in any way, shape, or form. It's not even portable, which is one of the iPod's main selling points.

RYDAIN! WEEEEEEEEE =D

Like I said, the portability thing is an issue. It would be a somewhat decent laptop if it WERE a laptop.

Yeah, I'm still here...generally quiet, but still here.

*pokes around the website some more* Wow...they'll soon be selling a notebook variant of the computer, and from its preview picture, it doesn't appear to be fugly. There's also a playme gadget that serves as portable media storage and plays mp3's. It's not exactly as good-looking as the iPod, but it seems to have a similar interface (with buttons arranged logically in a ring). Maybe there is some hope for this product line after all.

I also found a CNN article about the hip-e products. Evidently they're trying to make hardware that looks good (like Apple's gear) and works together well (like Apple's gear) but runs Windows or is initially intended for Windows-based systems (unlike Apple's gear). They also did market research to see what teenagers wanted. Still, though, I'm reminded that New Coke did triumph in taste tests, and look how that turned out. (Yeah, I know it's not a good analogy because hip-e's stuff isn't replacing a popular brand of computer hardware, but it's an interesting example of how market research can colossally flop.)

Alright, so what's the deal? Computers are stretching in two directions.

One direction, we see the ultracomps. The computers from Alienware, or the custom built, self assembled powerhouses that'll last for ten years and still be able to run cutting edge games with ease, the ones you never see in retail because they're just too good for the public.

Other direction are the poodles. iMacs, the Hip-E, anything at all from Dell. Computers that look really pretty and claim to have cutting edge technology in their guts, except a quick look on newegg.com shows that you just spent 1700 dollars on a 450 dollar POS. It's like those cars you see at the front of a used car lot, shit on wheels but really sleek looking, and isn't that all that matters? If it looks nice?

Not with computers, it doesn't. These two directions are gonna be where computers will ascend, in beauty and in brains. Smart users will get the smart computers, but everyone else, the people who want the coolest looking stuff on the market, the "Keeping up with the Jones" people, will end up buying the poodle comps and being royally screwed in the arse by companies, who will push further and further with their shitty equipment until finally massively overpriced equipment begins to extend into the section of the computer world that actually deals in GOOD parts. It's insane.

I'm all about function over form. My computer is a collection of assorted good hardware - dual Athlon 1800 MP's, some sort of GeForce that was cheap but has pretty good specs and works fine and dandy for my purposes, Audigy 2 sound card, monster hard drive, 512 MB ECC DDR RAM - stuck in a basic black server case. Its only embellishments are a blinking blue side fan (which was an accidental choice - Rando didn't know it blinked until after he got it), a Cartman sticker (just for fun), and a few scratches incurred when a window fell on it and broke (yes, this really happened). Its monitor is a basic 21" Philips that has served me well for 3 years and isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Of course it will sell, but just like AOL users everyone will laugh at you. It sucks if I had 1700 to spend on a comp I would get a decent gaming comp and have about 200 left over easily. The teens might like the design, but they probably expected at least a half decent computer that isn't way outdated before it hits the selves.

Anyway, I will be getting a new computer in 2 monthes anyway Is this a good price for what I will be getting:

160 Gigs
win xp home
buch of extra software like office, animators etc (they say its a 200 value)
3.4 ghz
Radon graphics card

Mainly just all the stuff in a high end PC nowadays. I can't really remember alot about it

It will cost me about $1,100 canadian which is....I dont know how much in american, $750 or something like that?

All I will be using it for is to install all of the sims games, all the age of empires games, surf the net, maby watch/burn dvd's, and listen to music. I need the best graphics and sound card out there...what would they be so I can watch out for them?

If you're getting a new computer in 2 months, I'd wait on the graphics card. The new PCI-Express cards are definately better in performance over the AGP cards. So, I'd wait until you're about to buy it, then see what's on the market for PCI-Express.

Right now, all there is for PCI-Express :

Radeon X600 XT 128MB 128-bit DDR (736MHz)

GeForce 6600 GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 (1 GHz)

I think it's priced correctly, I mean, not as cheap as it should be but the specs match for the way it's used.

Also, it's the kind of PC that absolutely rocks for bring-your-own-pc lanparties. See, it's pretty much like a laptop divided in 2 parts, however it's fast enough to play lanparty games, such as quake 3, UT, and CS (I fucking hate it but it's still popular) -- I'd have to check but it's probably cheaper than those mini-cube pcs if you don't buy a barebone set...

By the way I have a radeon 9600XT and a 2.1Ghz Athlon XP, and Doom 3 runs smoothly at 1024x768, and by smoothly, I mean I rarely get under 60FPS even when the scene is very graphics-rich. Now the fact that they put a pentium M there sucks, but it probably won't have to throttle to lower speeds since it's not a laptop... One thing is sure, it won't run doom 3 ;p

Might not be clear, but I think it's a shitty idea to make PCs that are not customizable, they'd make so much more money if they were like alienware... But face it, the Hip-E has EVERYTHING you'd want in a PC... (I wouldn't use most stuff in it and could get something more suited for my needs and infinitely more powerful for $1000 though)

They're basically making it easier for the rich, computer illiterate crowd to get access to technology. The customers, which I believe will be mainly 13-17 year old girls, will be satisfied... And Hip-e will get rich.. Millions of overpriced iPod pieces of crap were sold, why not this?

Dude, no. The purpose of a LAN party computer is to be godly powerful, without power you're not a man in the eyes of your fellow gamers. Also, half the fun of a LAN party is packing up a massive tower and lugging it over to your friend's houses. If you take away the power of the comp, and take away the fun of lugging it around, you pretty much have a computer that just won't do for the parties.

The LANs that I go to, we all have butt-ugly, but incredibly strong computers. If someone brought a poodle like that to one of our LAN parties, we'd probably end up crushing it or something.

LMAO ok I have a story relating to this, I told my friend about it and he browsed the site and watched the trailer video. In the trailer it shows a conversation between a few people on aim, so my friend writes the names down. Today about an hour ago one of the screen names(I wont bother to give it out, just watch the trailer and suffer) came online so my friend starts up a conversation:
(it just seems like a stupid conversation and my friend could have been a little better about what questions he asked. Just thought I would share this with you guys.)

SamSkizzy: asl?
booleanman: hi billy
SamSkizzy: lol
SamSkizzy: hi
SamSkizzy: how did you know it was me?
booleanman: Precognition?
SamSkizzy: o?
SamSkizzy: so how many random IMs do you get in a day?
booleanman: This would make 2
SamSkizzy: so are you a maker of Hip-E computers?
booleanman: no
SamSkizzy: why did they put your screen name on the trailer?
booleanman: That was a comical error :-)
SamSkizzy: you have nothing to do with Hip-E computers?
booleanman: Well that isn't exactly true, but I don't work for them no
SamSkizzy: did they ask you to IM them
SamSkizzy: and tell you what to say?
booleanman: I'm not at liberty to go into detail there
SamSkizzy: why not?
booleanman: Well no reason probably but I don't think it would be professional to elaborate on any position I may hold on a product that hasn't even launched especially when you consider I am not authorized to speak on behalf of the company nor do I work for them
SamSkizzy: how old are you?
booleanman: Again I should probably not disclose anything that could be used to draw conclusions about some product not yet launched
SamSkizzy: i understand...
booleanman signed off at 3:02:26 PM.

I just thought it was kind of interesting.

That reminds me...many drag racers drive sleepers, which look average to ugly but kick serious ass. It can be advantageous to have people think that your car isn't a winning contender...and it must be absolutely hilarious if you drive a rusty, primer-smeared boat that completely whups a decaled, giant airplane winged monstrosity.

Rando goes to LAN parties on a fairly regular basis (there's a small local group that hosts them), and he actually bought a mini computer case just so he wouldn't have to drag a monstrous tower to and fro. I can see how carting your computer around could be part of the fun of the whole experience, but being an engineer, Rando is all about efficiency.
