I have two theories. One is less complicated than two.

One: If time travel were ever possible, we would have already come back and told us.

Two: The idea of time travel is widely misunderstood. You don't just disappear from this time and appear in another time. You would go through the same time, just at an incredible speed. So lets say you could go through a year in one minute. You would die. Why? You would need food every day like normal, for that year. In 6 seconds, a month or so has passed with out you eating, you die. You would need a way to eat at a fast pace for that year. How would you do that? Thats why I think time travel will never be possible.

I used to think that too. Then I took some physics class at school. Velocity and speed. It is possible to have both negative and positive velocity. Walking backwards and forwards, for example. Now speed, can only be positive. If it could be negative, then we would go back in time. I might have gotten speed and velocity mixed up. Either way, going back in time is impossible.

Kario: if time travel existed, we wouldn't have gone back and told us.

Ever see Back to The Future or that one simpsons halloween episode? Any change of the past, even something so small as killing a bug telling like, our ancestors that time travel exists, would screw up the present royally, in both good and bad ways. They'd probably just want people to figure it all out for themselves rather than change history as we know it.

Well, I see it this way. Right now we are travelling through time, at a speed of one second per second. We are already going into the future, one second at a time. Now the time travel people think about is when you go from 2000 to 2010. We could do that, but we have already been doing it for 4 years, we have six years left. To get there in 5 seconds could be possible, but that time still passes and you die because you have nothing to eat or drink for six years.

I like to think that only travelling to the future is safe. The future situation is and cannot be set in stone like history is. If you go to the past and squish a bug, to use your example, the present gets fucked. If you go to the future, you can commit genocide thanks to the wonders of entropy.

Thank you so very much Mr. Hawking.

Edit: Check this out.

Unless this is the first time around. That is, if there is no future yet because it hasn't happened yet. And once it does, it would be possible to go back and tell ourselves.

Time wouldn't speed up WITH you, time would speed up for everything AROUND you while time for you stays still. It's part of Einstien's Theory of Relativity, and it's quite possible to travel "forward" in time if you somehow manage to go at the speed of light. Not instanttaneously, mind you, but fast enough forward to go thousands of years into the future.

You took a physics class, but you forgot to walk away with something:

Velocity is a vector quantity, meaning there are two pieces of it to measure: Speed AND Direction. The negative in negative velocity is that you're walking backwards compared to your frame of reference. Speed will always be positive.

Speed, however, is a scalar quantity, meaning that that's all there is, speed, it's not three hundred MPH south, it's just three hundred MPH. If you can find some way to make speed itself, the scalar quantity speed, become negative (impossible at this time since the least movement we can possibly do is not moving at all, which stick us at zero, a far cry from three million m/s), then forward time travel is theoretically possible. At this point, however, it is not.

When you hit the speed of light I thought time slowed and went backwards? I have the formula for it around here somewhere, my teacher went through the physics of lightspeed travel with us at some point.

One thing about Einstein's Theory of Relativity though...you have to remember that the closer you get to being the speed of light would be the closer you get to having your mass becoming infinite (in other words, if you didn't have some sort of theoretical anti-matter holding you from that fate, you wouldn't make it).

Course then if I remember my reading, Einstein's theory doesn't rule out tacient speeds (speed of light or faster/multiples aka Warp Speed and multiples if it were possible) since light is already traveling that fast and the mass, for all I know, isn't infinite. So I guess the best theory I've heard thus far is trying to hitch a ride in a beam of light...or alternatively, if you want to put movies/books into it...the closest unexplained would probably be Contact; by the movie's cut, 18 hours passed for the rider for the instant that everyone else saw it...which makes me wonder if that whole place was a pocket dimension via wormholes or something else...course then this might've been a bad example period.

See...now I want to find that old Journeyman Project game and go for broke. Thanks guys.

You know, if you use wormholes you can travel in time. It's just that wormholes hadn't been proven practically.

Place one end of the wormhole on earth, place the other one on a spaceship. Wormholes is a shortcut through space, look it up on the net. It's related to Black holes.

Make the spaceship travel very fast for some years (near lightspeed) time goes faster in the spaceship, which make the spaceship and the wormhole a little bit in the future. Wormholes can travel between two locations and time, according to the theory. I doubt this work as I have no idea how to make the wormhole, and how to make it follow the spaceship in the same speed.

It's have been proven that time speed changes depending on how fast the clock travels. They used a atom-clock and a jet. Einstein predicted this.

...I probably messed something up. :/

Time travel..eh haven't taken any physics class or anything but I'm not sure if it could be possible. If we traveled back in time and messed shit up then it would screw us up. If you tried to fix something then that would have some kind of effect on the future, like others have said. So I think I'd rather travel in the future than in the past. Is it possible? Hell if I know.

Read on superstring theories and particle history theories before you even think of discussing time travel.

Each of your particle's has a unique future history, so time travel will probably just disassemble you.

the speed of your body would not affect your body's mechanics if you were to time travel you wouldn't need to eat unless the event of traveling through time took long enough to make you hungry. Time travel is entirely possible just not backwards. all you have to do is go near light speed (because if you were to go light speed your mass would become infinite destroying the universe) in a straight line away from earth then tur around at a 180 degree angle then go back to earth. then depending on the distance you traveled you would be at a different point in the future but unable to go back.
