2004-08-31: Phil, aka PowerAbuser. For finally owning up.

Between new iMacs, Civilization 2 online with Kitten Yiffer, and getting work done, I almost forgot today's award.

To the untrained eye, it's pretty much what you said. Technically it is still a full - but compact - computer, with some PCI ports and stuff excluded. It won't be a laptop until it loses a bit of weight, can run off the laptop model - basically, everything inside the motherboard with a few options like PC-card slots.

It is nice that you (with an extra VESA mount) can hang it on the wall though.

It also seems to be a lot of bang for your buck. Show me a $1,200 PC with the same capabilities - an 80GB Serial ATA drive, 17" LCD display, Firewire, USB 2.0, stereo speakers, and I guess also software to make your own music, a light office suite, encyclopedia and two games (yes, I said games) - in the box. Now try to hide it behind said LCD display.

Yeah but wasn't it fun? The computer are quite easy on the difficulty we run on so we probably will soon own them.

His Civ have like three cities as of now, or four. I have around 20. Which is actually quite low for me. (I hate starting on a small continent )

It's not assembled, and you didn't include two 'real' (retail) games. You also forgot RAM entirely.

The HD is not Serial ATA. Yes, this does fucking matter. Here's one. It's not hard.

There's still some contoversy about what Pentium 4 CPU a 1.6 G5 should equal, but I'm pretty sure it needs to be better than 2.4GHz.

Good effort finding all those parts though. My point wasn't that assembling a PC with matching specs would be impossible, my point is that the iMac is now decidedly very close to a PC with matching specs in price.

See why the iMac is a good value? If we were to concede that the set you assembled was a complete, assembled computer, matching the iMac in every way, $165 is still far less of a margin than people say Apple have. And I think some people would gladly spent those $165 just to be able to hang it on the wall, or have fewer cords to their computer, or to free up desk space.

That iMac looks pretty spiffy and seems really good.
Oh and radeon 9200 sucks bongoass. Darkstone is like, 5 years old. Always pick Athlong over Pentium, it's given. 80gb hd for 69$ is expensive. A 160gb one cost like 99$. Just some general info

Wasn't there Linux for PowerPC? (Mac)

...but then it's still can't run x86 programs. Unless emulation.

The only time I hae tried Mac is by emulation, I still have the emulator somewhere on my HD.

Whoops, you did include RAM. Don't I look silly.

I did say "you didn't include two 'real' (retail) games." which is true for all cases except for when you do include two retail games. Including one, minus fiftyseven and thirtynine retailgames. And yes, I saw the game. My eyes now cannot skip over the word "uma". Thanks a lot, YD.
