Is it possible to burn AVI/MPEG/... files on a DVD and then play them on a DVD player on TV?
Should it be saved/burned in a special way?

I'm planning to buy a DVD player for TV, does it have to be a "special" one in order to play those birned DVD's?

You can convert an AVI to an MPEG in a number of ways - If you have Nero it's uber easy.

I have several Family Guy CDRs filled with MPEGs and they play on every DVD player in the house.

They're called VCDs - Good stuff.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a CD to burn the stuff on their, as the quality can lack on VCDs and SVCDs (you're only dealing with a ~700 MB disc as opposed to several gigs).

As for DVD burning, Nero should take care of that with the newer releases as long as you have a way of burning DVDs. Just don't burn it to anything strictly data, otherwise it won't run; there should be a way to make it a video DVD with Nero, if I'm not mistaken (like it allows you to make S/VCDs). Most players will run them, but I forget which one is more compatible: the DVD+ or the DVD-. I want to say it's minus, but I'm not sure. If you aren't sure, take a look at the specs with a guide that comes with a DVD player. It should specify what media it can play.

I have zero experience dealing with DVD creation so I'm just sharing what little knowledge on the subject I could seeing no one else would.

Well, if you got your DVD-Player before DVD recordables were commerical, then you will have to ask someone with a movie on those formats and see what works.

But anyways, Nero can make DVD movies for you. The key thing you must remember is the movies MUST already be in MPEG2 format. Otherwise, you will probably wait a day or two, waiting for Nero to convert your video into MPEG2 and then going from there.

I believe there are programs to help you convert to MPEG2 format videos so a quick google shouldn't be a problem
