The other option should be VHS.

DVD of course, VHS is crappy in most ways. Expect that it's easier to record things on VHS than DVD.

VHS is dying. I see less and less of it...

You could buy 2 VHS in place of a DVD, so DVD it is

Nothing like playing a film on your PC/PS2

See, you have to look at both formats here (both advantages and disadvantages of each):

DVD:
+ (1) High quality video on a disc
+ (2) Special features not on a VHS tape
+ (3) No tape to rewind or fast forward
- (4) Can easily be scratched or get dust on, however. . .
+ (5) Easy to clean off scratches and dust
+ (6) Can be double-sided for wide-screen and full-screen on the same disc
+ (7) Durable, hard to break (but can be done with enough effort )

VHS:
- (1) The necessity of rewinding/fastforwarding to get to a scene or to the beginning of the tape
+ (2) Don't have to worry about "cleaning" a disc
- (3) The tape can get wrapped in the heads in the VCR
- (4) Loses video quality quicker than a DVD

This is all I can think of right now.

(Edit: Yeah 6 DVD advantages against 1 VHS advantage -- no contest here. )

Hm, a one sided poll

But that's what you get with new technology, newer is always better, just depends on the market (like how VCDs and Laserdiscs failed)

DVD.
After sometime using DVD, you see how VHS is crappy.
And DVD haves extras and more stuff.

I got my DVD player late ... it will be gonna one year in April
Besides the higher quality, space and sound issues the DVD also saves a lot of room compared to a video
As long the DVD recorders are not getting below 200 Euros here, the VHS won't be dead entirely, since the majority of the DVD users own an DVD player, but the videorecorder got its name not randomly though ...
Excluded the fact that all newer computers have an DVD+/-RW rewriter installed, there even are getting new combinations onto the market: DVD- and VHS-Combos ... even the DVD-Combo of one device got a recording featureI recently read about it.

Sooner or longer also digital harddisks should not been forgotten ... they save up to 80 hours of the current TV program; so you're not bound on the actual sending time
But I anyway watch TV rarely only

The industry already works hard on the sequel of the DVD. Sony's answer is the PDD - if I'm not wrong, a PDD with one layer/side already holds at least 20 GBs of data ...

Anyone who votes VHS sholuld be shot. This poll is kinda... obvious. Hmmm, should I choose the one that you have to stick in a VCR that gets dirty and makes it harder to see sometimes, and really can't fit much on there, and has only one option: watch... or should I pick the one with way more advantages? Hmmm...

'Bout the only thing VHS has going for it is that it's cheaper. The tape itself can wear out & break.

I'll go with the most obvious choice and say DVDs, for obvious reasons that were already stated

Hardly anyone around here is buying VHS's anymore.

It's like the difference between audio CD's and audio cassettes, except with video

But I have yet to watch any movie on DVD All I have is the DVD drive on my computer, we don't have any DVD player ...

I don't really mind anyway, I was pretty far behind in the tape -> CD transition too

VHS is ancient.

DVD's - Better quality, cooler looking, extras, menus.

I just hope to see the price of DVD's drop sometime soon, maybe when VHS completely dissappear.

Well, you can find a lot of discount DVDs at some of the major retailers -- mostly at about 5 or 6 bucks. But yeah, the mean prices of the new release DVD movies that are coming out are close to $20 or more. . .
