54: Be original. Don't use too many puzzles that have been used in almost every hack... 55: Don't quickly make a hack and think it is the best. Take you sweet time. Even if it is a few years... 56: If you suck at graphic design, learn from hacking SMW. Play around with the 8x8 editor and just see what you can do. Then take techniques (not graphics!) from other games and hacks to see how they do those graphics. You could possibly make more YI style graphics of your own if you see how YI's graphics were done. 57: When designing sprites, draw something and work with it. Make some outline and then texture it. You will then easily see some weird thing be made... |

58) Do NOT use cheats when testing your hack, unless it's to get through an already-tested area. If you cheat you don't get an idea of the real difficulty level. If you can't beat it without cheating, it's too hard, because people who haven't played it before won't know the levels which makes it 10 times harder. 59) NO GLITCHES! Intentional or not! 60) Don't just litter coins, powerups, and extra lives everywhere, but make sure you put some in. 61) Too many sprites makes things difficult, and can cause slowdown, glitches and crashing. 62) When taking screenshots make sure they don't say things like "State 0 loaded". 63) Forcing the player to die or lose powerups is a BIG no-no! (You'll notice Nintendo never does this in any game. It sucks.) 64) When people complain about something, no matter how cool you think it is, fix it! If everyone except you thinks you're wrong, you're probably wrong. 65) Long empty stretches are boring, especially on the overworld. 66) Give adequate time limits, if you use them. In general, take however long you take to finish the level, and add 100 to it. |

Whoh, never though this thread #1, wouldn't get closed and #2, wouldn't continue on. I keep on forgetting this is Acmlm's Board. 67) Original tricks these days are now hard to do. So don't feel discouraged if you can't figure a cool trick nobody has used yet. 68) Do you know how fugging annoying it is to get stuck? AND YOU'RE NOT USING SAVESTATES!??!?!?!!! Seriously mon, don't make places where non-cheating people are forced to reset. 69) You'd be a total idiot if you didn't lock your hack when you're done. Not only does that make the hack a built-in strategy guide, it kinda takes the fun out of finding new places when you look at the hack in LM. Yes, there's your smarts, but think about the morons. Be smart, lock your hack! 70) Crappy GFX leads to puking players. 71) Don't make your hack a obsession and work on it ALL THROUGH THE DAY. 72) Holiday levels are not okay. So don't do them. 73) Lord, PLEASE make sure you use the Credits menu. Otherwise you have to put the copyrights in the readme. And most people don't read it. 74) If you don't put your copyrights...The C.E.C (Copyright Enforcing Commity) will have your butt. *Flashes C.E.C card* (edited by Darkmatt on 11-01-04 02:03 AM) |

75) Do not change the palettes in a way some borders are evidently lighter than black. It just looks crap. 76) There is a difference between challenging levels and plain crap. A challenging level is e.g. when you have to find the way out of a large log maze. A plain crap level is when you have to jump on 1 block wide ledges on the bottommost row of the level (which you, as you know, only can see the highest pixel of). Never release any of the latter. 77) A single good idea can't be the subject of a whole level. You know, you need lots of them for one. 78) Use real overworld L2 events. You know, with appearing paths and such. 79) ASM hacks aren't neccessary nowadays, but they make your hack look ... you know... sorta exclusive. There are lots of ways of inserting them, such as writing a custom block or using BMF's palette asm caller hack (look @ his website for that). |

80. Don't make levels completely out of cement blocks. 81. DONT use Super Demo World to base your hack on so you can use the already overused backgrounds and ExGFX. 82. Don't host your hack with angelfire. It doesn't let you directly link |

Umm...yeah. Not copyrighting something that is ALREADY illegal kinda doesn't make sense. I'm law enforcement would rather get you for hacking then not copyrighting something that has been hacked already

83. Use new palettes, expecially if you're using only SMW graphics. Granted, I may not do this, but I suck at paletting in SMW. 84. Place object templates every so often at the top of the level, then delete them when you finish the level. 85. It is OKAY to change the status bar palette, as long as it is still readable. 86. ExAnimation gets you places. 87. Don't heavily overuse custom blocks like the SMB3 bricks unless you're hiding a secret in them, such as a 3-up moon or a key exit. |

88: When using ExGFX of your own, add decoration to it. Don't just make a ground. Add trees or brush or bones or something to give it more originality. 89: Layer Priority is a great effect to pull off to make Mario go behind a wall or something. You could make a secret exit with that. 90: Sprites can be as weird or as realistic as possible and it still wouldn't matter. This is a game featuring a plumber who eats mushrooms and rides dinosaurs, so making walking eyeballs with legs or a Gamecube with jet engines is alright. 91: Animation is a great way to add originality to a hack. What is even more original is animation with the sprites. Try it out. 92: Palette animation can be used to make awesome effects with stuff like computer terminals or light dimming. Use it. |

*Looks at post stickied* Yes. My dream is finally fulfilled. *Sniff* I'm so happy. 93. Making an awesome hack require a GIANT number of hours into it. Otherwise it'll just take years to complete. 94. It's your option to release demos. I don't, because I'm cursed to screw up when releasing a demo. |

95. Be in a good mood when designing levels. A poor mood can lead to overly sadistic level design you don't remember to correct until it's too late.

96: Try to avoid sharp contrast in your palettes, it almost always looks like crap. The built in gradient feature should be your new best friend.

97: For making graphics, just draw and see what you just did. Since there really should be more un-realistic stuff, draw and texture whatever. You could make some really nice tileset that hasn't been done before... 98: Grass is not always pure green. In fact, the unedited SMW has some sort of teal-green color to it for the darker color. Give some sort of tint for more originality. 99: Use a tile editor for making sprites, not LM's built-in editor. You can see the entire sprite in a tile editor (well... most sprites...) thus you can see the sprite clearly. |

Must.....resist.....urge....to put in....#100 tip....AAAGH!!! 100. All in all, the hack's supposed to be fun. Keep that in mind or you'll make an impossible hack that isn't worth the time. DARN IT! I keep on doing this...anyway, THANKS OR POSTING!!! (Not the end. What?) EDIT: oop! Another hint immediately. 101. You're often faced with the problem of using poor free sites like Angelfire (AngelEXpire) or Geocities (Geo****ties), Aim for a file host if you don't plan on having a homepage. (I.E. Use Photobucket for Image Hosting. ) (edited by Darkmatt on 11-30-04 06:36 PM) |

How about a good supplement to 100: 102. Remember: The perfect is the enemy of the good! Take that into account when making your hack! (edited by beneficii on 12-16-04 02:12 PM) (edited by beneficii on 12-16-04 02:13 PM) (edited by beneficii on 12-16-04 02:14 PM) |

Eh? Where does THAT come from? I've never seen such a problem. 104. Stuff from the ExGFX workshop can give your hack a nice touch if used perhaps once or twice, but you should not go crazy and use only stuff from it. |

105: Suck at graphic design? Try drawing a bunch of lines and see what you come up with. 106: Palettes should not be straightforeward (rocks be grey, grassland be green) but have some sort of tint to it. Add a little bit of another color and it will look different. |
