Seeing that the old one got lost in the dust, I feel like starting this up again. It not only saves posts, it saves time. I'll start with some.

EDIT:

GUIDELINES (Had to happen)

1. Make SURE you include a number. And make sure you include the RIGHT number.
2. If you want to respond to somebody about a tip, try to PM the person instead of posting.
3. DO NOT DRIVE THIS THREAD OFF-TOPIC OR SO HELP ME GOD.

Happy posting!

1. NEVER start hacking your 1st hack instantly you start SMW hacking, start slow before you release your 1st hack. Tinker with your rom, ask for level help. Make a 1st good level before you start. I had to learn that the hard way when I started. And trust me, the hard way takes years.

2. If you're planning to use the old GFX, fill in the gaps of the cement blocks. It'll look neater, and you'll have lees GFX problems.

3. A good level takes more then F (16) screens of area to complete. A short level with no good excuse is a bad one.

4. If you want an awesome hack, check out Anikiti's Luigi's Adventure. You'll learn lots of tricks from it and you'll know how rom hacks can make those tricks.

5. When inserting your 1st ripped ExGFX, rip off Allstars. It's GFX aren't compressed and is easy to rip. But I don't suggest using your 1st ExGFX, unless it's original. (Check Super Winter World)

6. Find out how all the Layer 2 commands work and use them to your full potential to make awesome levels. You'll be taking awhile finding how the commands work. But it's worth it.

7. A good hack has original levels. So push CTRL+SHIFT+DEL to wipe off all the objects and sprites. You're on your own with exits.

8. It's not necessary, but unique level names scores you bonus points.

9. A square overworld is a bad one. Put in some uniqueness to your overworld and listen to what players suggests for the overworld...they're always right when it's the overworld.

10. Listen to your players. NO ACCEPTIONS. It's pointless to make a hack if nobody wants to play it.

I list 10. But the list goes on if you contribute your advice.

I'd be graceful if somebody stickies this.

Very good thread, we have one like this on the old board, and that's very interesting for new smw hackers.

12. Always back-up your rom, EVERYDAY. Also, at least one time per month, save it in a disket or cd to avoid ANY troubles of 'losing' your hack.

13. Make the paletes of the FG fit between the others of the FG and with the BG. Some recent hacks have been mistaking on the palete part, and ugly and weird paletes affect the level design, one of the things that a game creator should give a lot of emphasis.

14. Don't release 1,000,000 demos of your hack. Your hack will be less interesting, and when you release its final version, ppl won't enjoy it at all...
FPI made an interesting system ofdemo releases, 2 worlds more complete at each demo.

15. Careful with the difficulty level with your hack. Any game is supposed to start EASY and become more hard as the player reaches higher stages of the game. Too hard hacks, where you have to use tons of game genie codes and save-states make the game be not fun, and a game is supposed to be fun too.

16. Show screens of your work before releasing a demo of it. And comments. Only a link to a ips file is not enough to cause someone be interested in your game.

thats what i have to say, for now

To go with this:

17. There are two background palettes to use. USE THEM INSTEAD OF THE STATUS BAR!

18. If you are going to use rips from SMAS... don't overuse them and don't use them the entire hack.

19. If you use SMAS graphics, DO NOT RECREATE LEVELS FROM SMB3 IN SMW! The levels will be too easy to complete and be dull and boring.

20. If you use rips, think about how much they have been used. If it is from SMAS or YI, know that they are overused.

21. If you want different graphics, make your own. That way, your hack will stand out in some way...

22. If you want to have different Koopas and want different colors for them, have a custom palette and change the big black area to be different palettes. You can edit them in a custom palette level. That way you won't screw up the mushroom and flower and stuff.

23. USE CUSTOM BLOCKS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN USED A LOT! I have seen enough SMB3 style bricks and breakable blocks. What about the locked door blocks and palette-changing blocks?

Umm, few things that makes some of your advice misleading.

20. If you use rips, think about how much they have been used. If it is from SMAS or YI, know that they are overused.

Yoshi's Island GFX isn't overused.....yet....and it's very hard to rip. Well, at least that's what I think. Dunno, don't know how to do it.

23. USE CUSTOM BLOCKS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN USED A LOT! I have seen enough SMB3 style bricks and breakable blocks. What about the locked door blocks and palette-changing blocks?

Ya want to know why they aren't used much? It's a tad on the complicated side. And some people thinks it's a bit weird to use them. Heck, even I don't use them.

And I have 2.

24. Don't feel discouraged if you can only get the cliched custom blocks and ExGFX. It beats SMW, that's for sure. So use them! Even if they are cliched...

25. LEARN TO DRAW PIXEL BY PIXEL!!! It'll REALLY help your original graphics.

26. Don't overuse the exgfx workshop. Use it, but don't be a 'dependant' of it. Try to rip your own graphics.

27. Careful with the difficulty level with your hack. Any game is supposed to start EASY and become more hard as the player reaches higher stages of the game. Too hard hacks, where you have to use tons of game genie codes and save-states make the game be not fun, and a game is supposed to be fun too. (ok, ive already said that, but its so important imo that i HAD to repeat )

*Slaps head*

That brings up another stupid....but useful anyway advice. And then 2 more.

28. Don't have the same area in 2 different levels.

29. Using the Map16K-7 code is VERY advanced, so don't rush head 1st into it. Look up some tutorials.

30. NEVER go forward in making your overworld. You want to be in sync with level progress and overworld progress. Levels is fine, though.

Darkmatt, what do you mean by 30?

31. Give hints to your secret exits. No one likes one of them go backward a short bit, fall off the cliff, and float against the side of the wall with the cape until you pass through the wall then go more to the right and fall off then hover left and you'll teleport to the secret secrets.

32. Don't encase water in cement blocks unless you've fixed the graphics to fit it better. Just... don't.

32. Same with putting pipes in water.

33. Purposely glitched sprites - or glitched sprites, period - suck.

34. Not everything the people who actually developed the Mario games have done is a good idea. Remember this when capping pipes with the default cement blocks or other such things.

35: You are making the hack for other people, not yourself. What may be easy to you is hard to others. Keep that in mind.

36: Beta testers are a good asset to getting every last detail perfect.

37: PLAYTEST ALL THE TIME. Dont screw up one tiny thing and have to spend 10 minutes fixing it.

38: Flashy GFX do not make a good level. Good level design makes a good level.

39. When you think you have finished yur hack, before its release, play it, beat it. Thoroughly test every nook and cranny. You don't want to release your hack that you worked so hard on, only to realize you need to do a major bug fix because of glitchy graphics, etc. If this occurs, it will discourage people from downloading it again, due to your prior unprofessionalism.

40. Pixel art tip when creating custom gfx: Follow this rule of thumb: Up 1, over 2. Make 2 pixels then create another row. Do not draw on a 45 degree angle unless absolutely neccessary.

What I mean by 30 is that you should keep your level progress and overworld progress the same, if you get ahead into the overworld, it might turn ugly...

41. You ALWAYS want to go back into your ExGFX file that see what you can do to enhance your graphics. Do it like 5 times before you finish up.

42. DO NOT PLACE EXTRA LIVES EVERYWHERE. Just..don't...it'll REALLY degrade your hack.

43. Bonus levels shouldn't be so FREAKING chuck full of coins, don't forget, you still have to be creative.

44. Make many levels before finishing it. It makes it odd.
45. Don't use Message Boxes to gather tasks; they must give hints or info to the player.
46. Don't give screenshots with text. It does stupid.

47. Sort of like what Darkmatt said, make sure your overworld has proper levels. Like dont make a desert on your OW but make one of the levels in it be a cold snowy level

48. Dont use clashing palettes. Dont use dark red BG with dark purple FG.

Hello people..
Well, I don't agree at all with those hints. You don't have to please the public or the Nintendo Power critics. Why? Because you aren't selling your game. It may sound stupid, but in fact, a Super Mario World hack is almost an artistic work. And in art, you don't have to follow rules.

I believe Nintendo would love to put some dumb things in the original Mario games. But they can't. They have to sell cartridges.

You are free to make anything: A "professional" level is as beautiful as a hard, confusing one.

Yoshi Island GFX? Great Idea. Silly hand-made-naked-Mario GFX? Also a great idea. What really matters in ROM hackin' is: Keep in mind that you don't have to please people. You just have to see in the screen your idea becoming reality.

Sorry about my bad English

.........

You forgot to put the number.

But you don't want to waste your time if you're planning to release a crappy hack. That's why I say be enviormental friendly, don't waste posts and space releasing a hack that is crap. You'll just get lectured, and, if things turn out for the worst, flamed.

And FYI, Theses are not hints, they're ADVICE. ADVICE! Your Grandpa gives it to you every day!

*Shurgs* Now that I got that out of my system, I'm going to once again, put in the 50th advice, of an advice thread.

49. Read above. It's a response, and advice!

50. Always think what are others going to say about your hack. Have beta testers. It'll save time. It's not required, but it really helps.

Thanks alot for your generous advice people! Keep up the good work!

I know it'll mess up the exact number of 50, but I've got a few tips:

51. Don't use too many ExGFX in your 1st hack. You'll spend several months making it instead of just a few weeks.
