So, which bands or artist you consider to be overrated or underrated?

Here's mine:

Overrated: Eric Clapton, he is not so good imo, I love his song 'holy mother', though.

Underrated: Scorpions. They are a german band. They are excellent, they have a lot of neat and wonderful works, but unfortunately few ppl either know or enjoy them. They had a heavy metal era, but they have been making some good new work at the last years, some really good ballads also.

So, which is under/over in your opinion and give the reasons you think that

overrated :
The Rolling Stones : i never really cared for them much. sure they have a few songs i like: Sympathy for the Devil, Paint it Black, Miss You. but none of these are really too earth-shattering, just a few catchy tunes i don't mind.

Also along these lines wasAerosmith. About the same story for both.

underrated :
Radiohead : i can't imagine another band ever coming along that comes close to catching what radiohead has been producing. when you look back to freaking 1991 and see the songs they were putting out ? jesus, the originality is so genuine it's almost startling. They're latest albums have grown in thier own ways, and i enjoy them just as much. On top of that, Tom Yorke and the crew given an AMAZING live performance. I can't even describe the conert, it was (i mark no current diety in my sights) an almost religious experience. And suprising for me, not knowing what to expect, was that they could pull off every song from the CD's better live, or at least an 'alternative amount of goodness in a different way', i'll say. even the more technical sounding songs from the later records like Kid A and OK Computer.

Roger Waters : Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd fame) has put out a few albums since leaving the band back in the mid 70's. Suprisingly they didn't sell nearly as well as David Gilmour's (took over lead of the band when Waters left), which i thought, while putting out some of his almost godly guitar work, was lacking substance in many areas. Waters songs were excellent, and definetly struck a cord with me. He's always been the stronger lyricist of the two from Pink Floyd, and although his voice is generally accepted as not being as strong as Gilmour's, his unique and many times ambiantly mixed songs, guitar, and almost most importanly lyrics just hit hard.

... and that's my rant

Radiohead are under-rated? By who!?!?

They're very good, and this is widely felt by many people. They have a huge fanbase. They get constantly fellated by critics. Every second British band wants to be them and so do bunches of others from elsewhere. Their albums sell plenty. Their shows are uber-expensive and still sell-out at the drop of a hat.

How, exactly, can they be under-rated when they're one of the biggest, most-acclaimed musical juggernauts of the last decade?

Arwon, I was thinking the same thing. Radiohead gets the proper recognition they deserve. Outstanding band.

For me:

Overrated: Hmm, well any American main stream rock music in the past 5 years. Well, maybe there's been one or two bands that have fallen through the cracks but...
You get my drift. It's just not the same anymore.

But I've always thought the Beatles were overrated. *ducks* I mean, they're good and all, I'll give you that. But for the attention they get? :/

Underrated: Oh jeeze. Where do I even begin? The list is just way too big for me to even begin to begin.

Overratted:
Any and every pop-singer/band that was coveered on any Kidz Bop CD *shudder*. They just suck. Any band/singer that gets covered on a kiddie album is usually popular, but in reality, they just suck. See also: Brittney Spears; Christina Agulara; J-Lo; Justin Timberlake; etc.

Underrated:
Moby. He has a wide variety of music for any kind of person. Most signifigant is his album Voodoo Child: The End of Everything. It is so meldoic and heartfelt that you will not be the same person after you hear this. Take the most beatuful melody you've ever heard and multiply it by a million. That's The End of Everything. Animal Rights isn't bad either. Very destructive though; the album is like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Listen to it and you'll know what I mean.

Most underrated band ever? I'd say Iron Maiden, but people give them the respect they deserve. Albeit, not enough. I'm going with Blind Guardian, they don't get the props they need, and are generally pissed on in the metal community.

For overrated, anything that is on the HIT radio stations

Overrated:
--------------
Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bon Jovi. Dave Matthews Band. Pink Floyd. Any other band that is found to be liked mostly by white children along the Eastern coast of the U.S.(Especially in MY state, New Jersey) They are really not good, people! The parts of these bands that everyone finds so good(the lead singer, lyrics) is what I find to be atrocious.

Underrated:
----------------
The Who. People today just look at them as some other band during the 70's that was overshadowed by Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. However, people fail to see that first of all, The Who first came out in the 60's, as well as the fact that they have a distinctly different taste than other bands at that time. To me, their songs during the 60's sound like the Beatles except more badass. I mean, I do know a couple of people who are into The Who[and other bands at the time] but only for songs like Baba O' Riley(Better known as Teenage Wasteland) and Behind Blue Eyes and fail to see the sweet and simpler songs like Squeeze Box and Sister Disco.

By the way, this is just what I've seen from people in my town and surrounding areas.

I'm only thinking in terms of "big" acts here, because anyone can rattle off a list of underappreciated local/underground stuff they personally like. That's just obnoxious.

I think Talking Heads are a bit under-rated, but that's just me and I think I like it that way. David Byrne himself is under-rated as far as the big old "god-heads" of music go - Bowie, Reed, Dylan, whoever else you care to name, probably because he's a bug-eyed weirdo who sings about television and peanut butter and beer. Byrne has aged far more gracefully than most - his latest album does NOT sound like that of a tired 50 year old.

A band that springs to mind as really under-rated are the B-52's. Everyone knows 'Love Shack' and a lot of people know 'Rock Lobster' but their repetoire runs a lot further than that. Off-kilter, zany, always fun, quite original and unclassifiable compared to their contempraries... and they even rose from the ashes after their singer died. They're underestimated.

They're still damn fun to see live, too, and apparently still all about the party well into middle age.

Over-rated to me would be the quality of having a conventionally "good voice". This covers all sorts of crap. "Bad" voices usually have a lot more personality and style anyway.

The minute I hear justification for Pink Floyd being "bad" is the minute I bomb something.

Oh, and I agree that pretty much every rock band is over-rated.

A good relationship for overrated underrated would be Rob Zombie vs. White Zombie. Everyone listens to the former, which pales in comparison with the latter.

Actually, Led Zeppelin wasn't really popular at all during the 70's. All the hype you hear about how big of an influence they were during the 70's is revisionist history. They became popular during the 80's because most of the 80's glam-rock and metal draws from Led Zeppelin as a major influence. Granted, I think they are an incredible band, but they were too heavy for the majority of people during the 70s.

Overrated:

-Post-Black Album Metallica. Every time I hear someone say Enter Sandman is "Heavy Metal" I want to punch someone's face in. For that matter, none of Kirk Hammet's solos are really that hard, old or new.

-Lots of 80's "Shredders" who really weren't fast at all, but just knew how to finger-tap and sweep pick. Vai or Malmsteen would blow them out of the water any day of the week.

-JIMI HENDRIX WAS NOT THE FASTEST GUITARIST EVER. He recieved the title "The Greatest Guitarist Ever", which is entirely subjective, and for some reason people intepreted "Greatest" as "Fastest". Again, Vai and Malmsteen (And the rest of the big-name guitar players) make him look like a novice.

-I'd say Nirvana is overrated, but considering there's a lot of people who are out saying that Kurt Cobain was a "Musical Genius" and that Nirvana was the "Best Band Ever"... Really, no band could ever live up to hype like that. Kurt was smart, but his intelligence lied in the intentional stupidity in his music.

-The Beatles are a great band, but once again, nobody can really live up to the title of "Best Band Ever!!!11111"

-A lot of people go around saying that System of a Down's guitarist is really good. He really isn't that good, he just looks into the dark and forgotten corners of music theory to pull out those weird licks he comes up with.

Underrated:

-I think Tool is way ahead of thier time. Unlike every other metal band these days, they're trying to find a heavier heavy, but without all the things that make modern nu-metal so shitty.

-Iron Maiden is almost unknown today except that you occassionally see a punk rocker wearing one of thier shirts. They're one of the most influential metal bands ever.

-Judas Priest is not talked about enough.

Overrated: RAP. People get too fucking high on testosterone for no reason over this music. What's worse is that it's practically a culture. Eminem is a prime example of that. He's got the deep lyrics, no doubt but it's too much testosterone, too much unneeded attitude.

White Boy Music. I'm talking about Sugar Ray, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and practically anything else you hear a MILLION times on the radio or could be on that latest Kidz Bop CD that could make you sweat blood because it's so asinine to listen to.

Underrated: Electronic music. Hardly ANYone listens to it and this genre has some originality to it. I'm not just saying this because it's my most favorite genre but really, it has originality.

Your heart is in the right place, but you are making very broad generalizations. It's just as possible to be original and intelligent and heartfelt with rap as it is to be stale and repetitive with electronic music. It's all about the individual artist.

I know that, but, I'm more or less talking about people today who listen to music from the 70's-80's who don't really focus on The Who, but other bands like Led Zeppelin. By the way, I am not saying that I don't like Led Zeppelin. In fact, I love their songs. But I believe that people should look beyond them sometimes when listening to some good rock.

The only reason I could see anyone not liking Pink Floyd is because they go overboard with the effects and studio work, and basically just overproduce thier music. They're by all means quite a talented group of people, though.
