The No Child Left Behind plan is the only thing I back Bush on. He went about it the wrong way though. It would have made more sense to equalize the balance. But by lowering education standards for the lesser educated you're only furthering the ghettoization of America. The main reason for the disparity in your nation is due to poor education. If you don't attempt to teach everyone, even the despondant students who don't seem to care, then you are disservicing society. Inequality=hate. |

I'm going to have to agree with Raistlin on the diploma issue. Grey, if you work hard and succeed throughout high school, as it's obvious you're doing, then don't even worry about them. The most they will ever achieve is a high school diploma that will let them do the jobs that none of us want to do. The program isn't very good, granted, but we do need people on the lower end of the spectrum. *shrugs* Harsh, but true. Now...on the issue of religion in school. This is, no doubt, an extremely touchy issue. I am a bit confused though, about what types of policies you're referring to that Bush is trying to put into place. If you could give a place to get info, or some examples, I'd greatly appreciate it. As fo rmy opinion on the matter...I can understand where people on the opposite side come from. No one should be forced to pray in school. I do think, though, that people should have the ~right~ to pray in schools. As of now, in the majority of schools across the nation, no one is allowed to even mention God or religion. In fact, some schools aren't even allowed to have Christmas break because it has the word Christ in it. Instead, it's called Winter break. Personally, if no one is making people pray, they shouldn't be able to stop us either. On gay marraige...well...my opinion is not exactly well liked. I see both sides of the argument. I understand that most of the controversy with gay marriage is the issue of marriage rights, ie insurance, hospital visitation, etc etc. In my opinion, it's easy to appease both sides. Do not force churches to provide a place for gay marriage, leave that up to them. Afterall, seperation of church and state. And really...I disagree with calling it marriage. To me, it's a violation of the sacred bond. Instead, I think they should just be allowed to have civil unions, or something along those lines. I've forgotten the exact term. In otherwords, they receive all the benefits of the marriage (insurance, taxes, etc etc) but it's technically not a marriage. Like a common law marriage even. I see that as solving the issue with both sides happy *shrugs* And just to appease your fears...an amendment takes a 2/3 vote I believe, if not 3/4, so I wouldn't worry about it happening. I don't think that many people are so strongly against gay marriage. |

Of course, the scared bond thing is something the homosexual's will probably want to fight for as well. I can understand the civil union idea... I really can. Makes perfect sense. However, sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too. If it was up to me homosexual marriages would be outlawed, and in their stead, something exactly like you proposed, Lunar depths. It's a compromise, and a very fair one I might add. |

"To me, it's a violation of the sacred bond." Marriage hasn't been a sacred bond for years now and you know it. Fuck it, let's just get rid of marriage altogether. Well, in the sense of what it is anyway. You can still get married, but it doesn't count for anything. It will just be an empty symbolic....thing. (My vocab is off tonight.) And replace what it is now with civil unions, for everyone, gay and non-gay. |

Well, it's a matter of equality. If marriage is a sacred institution (and it certainly is religious in the current consensus on its roots... you decide how accurate THAT is) and you favor civil unions for same-sex couples, guess what. You don't get to call them marriages for heterosexual couples and gay couples have to go with civil unions. Same rights and responsibilites for everyone, so the names don't get to be different. Now, if it's in a church, they can decide. But the state can't do that... equal protection and all. Then again, from what I've read, Texas wasn't constitutionally allowed to cast electoral ballots for Bush/Cheney anyways, so it's not like something as nitpicky as nomenclature is gonna mean anything. |

Religion in school: Lunch time clubs, plain and simple. Pray or meditate at lunch. Muslims should be allowed to do their prostration to Allah as often as it is dictated during the day. Gay marriages: It doesn't hurt me, everyone has the right to make poor choices. Marriage that is. Abolish the term marriage. Replace it with civil unions that can be sanctified if the Church wishes it. Seperation of Church and State upheld. America needs better health care. Nationalize it. Your health care system is shit for the average person. If you don't have the money, you slowly die of cancer. It is unfair. Look at countries like Norway, Sweden...Best health care systems in the world. Canada is slipping, but that is because of our major internal problems with the current administration. As long as the Conservatives do not get in, I can breath a sigh of relief about our health care. Although the Provincial Liberal and Conservative governments sure love to ruin the concept of equal national healthcare. *coughKleincough* |

Originally posted by Legion I think they do something akin to that in France - a high degree of separation between the religious and civil/contractual aspects of marriage. Except they haven't extended civil unions to gay folks, I think. |
