It appears to be that way. Teletoon, unsurprisingly, announced NO anime series in their fall schedule, but YTV apparently had 4 shows still to announce. According to reports on ANN, ALL of them are anime. The acquisitions: Gundam SEED: YTV originally picked up Gundam Wing a few years ago but ended up switching the timeslot so many times that they effectively killed the franchise. SEED was rumored to be heading to Teletoon, but they're apparently really afraid to pick up anything anime-wise so it goes to YTV. Unsure if we get the edited or unedited version - depends on the timeslot. But a good choice. SD Gundam: I'm guessing this is a huge Bandai package deal - basically, if you want to air SEED, air SD as well. This should fit into YTV's afternoon programming during the week I'm guessing. .hack//SIGN: Think YTV might have missed the boat on this one by a year? I'm sure it can do well in Canada, but this might have been a better acquisition in 2003 instead. Still promising. Witch Hunter Robin: I think this one was apparent - YTV wants to reel in the Buffy crowd. I've actually heard good things about the series so I may go out of the way to take a peek at it. Any thoughts? We're still WAY behind you Americans, but at least we'll make a sizable step in catching up to you guys this fall. |

...You know, we do have Inu-Yasha. Actually we have a fair amount of anime but it's all on YTV - and half of it's Dragon Ball. |

That's not exactly the best of the best there, Colleen. I dunno if you've seen .hack//Sign or not, but I thought the animation style on it was kinda cheap, all talk, no action. Good story though. SD Gundam was really weird, IMO, and Witch Hunter Robin is boring as all heck. Haven't seen Gundam SEED yet, I don't think... Yuyu Hakusho's ok, but about halfway into the series it becomes Dragon Ball Z, and does it shamelessly. Like, REALLY shamelessly. Come to think of it, no matter where you look the internet really is the best place for anime, period. Even if you have 56k, it's still much more worth it to see something like Naruto than it is to see something like Witch Hunter Robin. |

Sigh.. Damn the anime public! Because of them, Gundam SEED is seen as "good" because of its popularity and thus, its being released in other countries when much better and representative Gundam series are still sitting around in the east.

Bleh, I'd rather see Zeta Gundam on DVD with high quality translation and audio. SD Gundam is way cool though, I never thought they'd license that one.

Grey: Actually, it IS good seeing as how we are extremely disadvantaged in Canada when it comes to anime. We had an advantage over the United States exactly ONCE and that was during the Sailor Moon period. It became extremely popular over here and moved quite a bit of merchandise. Then we just really fell behind. If I want to go buy an anime DVD, I'm likely going to have to pay between $40-50 Canadian just for one. And don't get me started on box sets. While those four might not be the cream of the crop (we still haven't gotten Cowboy Bebop, no word if we'll get FMA, etc.), it's still a start. The fact YTV's willing to pick up four series shows that they want to try make anime a little more mainstream for the Canadian public. (The real major acquisition last year was Inuyasha which became much more popular than YTV thought it would be - with a 10 PM time slot!) Actually, Fruits Basket is being shopped around to Canadian stations. That would be one advantage over you guys if we got it but it doesn't seem likely. |

Trunxy. Remember, the last time we had a decent anime was in the lat 90s when Teletoon first began to air, and they ran some Gundam Wing eps, all of the Macross Movies, and EVA movie and Ninja Scroll. After that we got Battle of the Planets, a total of six episodes I think we got, on Space in 2001.

Originally posted by Colleen Yeah, it didn't take Cartoon Network to get rid of these, didn't it? =\ SD Gundam was hilarious the first time I watched it, didn't care for it at all after that. .hack//sign seems to have a more interesting opening theme song than series. But I did miss the first three episodes, so I was kind of lost from the beginning. Witch Hunter Robin..... ehhh, not for me. |
