I'm a 17 year old, and i'm going into my senior year in high school. therefor, what is looming over me is the prospect of picking a college. i wanted to know if any of you had any suggestions as to a good college that meets some or all of the following requirements: 1- i do want to get out of RI, but not so far that its a pain in the ass to move back home in the summer, so somewhere in New England or in the NE area. i like major cities, so i'm thinking maybe a college in NYC or Boston. 2- I want to major in english, and keep art as a minor, so this college would preferably have good programs in both these subjects. 3- Dorms that are at least liveable because there's no way i'm commuting. i want to get totally out of my family house :-D thanks, suggestions would be helpful. if you dont know of any colleges, at least some tips on how i should conduct my search. i mean, there are probably hundreds of colleges that fit these requirements... i'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start! :-0 ~texx~ |

| Personally, you really can't go wrong with a white collar state university, like URI or UConn... They offer plenty of variety, and although I don't know if they have decent art programs, even if you want to get out of RI, you could try RIC. It's got a good art program and it contains english as a major (my sister's taking it I believe). | |||

| One thing to remember is out of state costs--it costs more to go to school out of state than in state. Cost is one factor in deciding where to go. However, if you are gifted enough to get into an out of state school, then there is always a way to pay for it. The key with college is making sure it is the right fit for you. Many of us would love to get away from our parents but if the college you end up going to makes you feel miserable, then maybe staying may have been a better option. |

I plan on taking my college classes online, and that's mainly because I'm in the Army and I can't really get out and go into the classroom. Most likely I'll enroll in Maryland something or other. I think my Medical course I had to take for my job training counted as 20 something college credits. |

| You live in Rhode Island, eh? Consider coming to Canada. We have excellent programs, and it is going to be a lot cheaper than US schooling. Although it is a fair distance, I'd say that going to Canada would be a good education bet. |

| CA has some good colleges. I need to pic one I want to transfer too. I don't plan on leaving my bootiful state though. You don't want to be too far so yeah, you're best kept near the East coast. Try somewhere different but not something that will be a big shock to you. That's one reason why I wouldn't go tot he east coast..too damn cold. | |||

| My friend goes to UPenn (University of Pennsylvania). It's in Phili, it's got a really good arts and letters department, and they do have dorms for the first two years. After that you probably have to find an apartament, but that's not too bad. NYU is really nice as well, but crazy expensive (but I guess UPenn is as well). N E ways, cali has nice schools, and if you want to go to the greatest school in the world, then I'd check out Notre Dame. That's my school and it's simply amazing. It really doesn't matter where you end up, you're going to have a great time in college if you get involved and go out of your way to make friends right off the bat. Well, I'd get started on those college apps now cause finishing them the night that they are due is really stressful, but I got that same advise last year and waited till the very end of the deadline. Do what you will with applications, just don't miss deadlines like I did with my backup schools. | |||

| I have two suggestion for you: 1) Oberlin (Oberlin, Ohio) 2) New York University (Somewhere in New York) Those two are great schools with a lot of reputation. They have a lot of variety and have what you're looking for. Sure, there are more colleges with everything you want and more, but those two are two of the best. Good luck. Note: If size matters, Oberlin is small, and NYU is big. Just letting you know. Oh, and they're pretty expensive. |

| If you're not too worried about price, Colgate University has an excellent English program, and they are ~very~ generous in financial aid. It's a small school, beautiful campus, and I think the dorms are nice too. If you apply, it's guaranteed the president of the university will write you a personal note on your letter. He'll even call sometimes, it's amazing. A very very good friend of mine just transfered up to Hamilton, which is another very good school. Fairly small, again, but excellent quality. I think they're both private though, so I guess it depends on what kind of school you're looking for. Good luck in the search though, and one word of advice, apply for every single scholarship you can get your hands on! |
