1) Learn how to program 2) Learn how the levels are stored 3) Make a program that draws a map of the level based on the level data 4) Allow moving blocks 5) Allow saving to ROM 6) Allow adding/deleting blocls 7) Add other functions and features 8) Release 9) Tons of bug fixes (edited by Smallhacker on 08-07-04 09:49 AM) |

You can buy a book about programming in C++ then spend about a year learning it like your life depends on it, then start learning how to hack roms in hex, then another year or so later you should have a decent editor. ...You should first know if you're prepared to spend all this time and effort on an editor first, and if you can really put your mind, and a lot of time, to learning a programming language and putting your skills into an program. You could also disassable the level loading ASM to figure it out. 3) Combine step 1 and 2 4) Combine step 1 and 2 5) Combine step 1 and 2 6) Combine step 1 and 2 7) Combine step 1 and 2 8) Compile, zip, upload, give link 9) Edit code, Compile, zip, upload, give link You can't just think "I want to make an editor" without knowing anything about programming. You have to know how to corrupt or disassable in order to find data. You need to be able to figure almost everything out without asking anybody. Knowing ASM and how the SNES works helps a lot. Also: If your next post is something like "Ok, and how do I do that", then you have to understand that it's most unlikely that you will make an editor for quite some time (a.k.a. 'round three years). |

Nothing too serious, just asking how to write an editor. I use Visual Basic 6 btw. |

Then forget about it, unless you can borrow a copy. I got mine thanks to my brother's MSCE stint |

A typo. It's an MCSE stint. A short-lived attempt at being a Microsoft Certified Software Engineer. Comes with free box o' goodies, including all the recent OSes, Offices and Visual Studios. |

Avoid Visual Basic like the plague. It ultimately will become a hinderance if you're at all serious about programming. Go for C/C++ (probably start with C).. and there are serveral compilers which are 100% free. Windows development takes a bit longer to get into with C, but once you become familar with the API, you can create apps just as fast as you could with VB, except you won't need a million runtimes to make them work. But yeah... you can make editors with VB. But you shouldn't. ;P |

Could you suggest any websites that let you download the compilers? | |||

OMFG, I'm sorry, but I've got to say this before I burst into laughter, this has to be the dumbest thread in the rom hacking forum. *Bursts into laughter* Checkplease, this isn't something where you just say "hey, I'm gonna make a level editor! It's gonna be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111" if you don't even know the most standard facts regarding the subject. So I suggest, study up big time if your actually keen on beginning this project. |

Originally posted by checkplease http://gcc.gnu.org/ or http://www.mingw.org/ They're just compilers... so unless you know the actual language... they won't do you a whole lot of good. Do a google search for some C tutorials. You'll probably start out with simple command line apps and it'll be a while before you'll be competent enough to make a full editor. Don't expect to make super-awesome apps right away. You have to crawl before you can walk ;D |
