No.... They'd have to climb it once first before then.

Did they offer to repaint the spire as good samaritans for the church, giving them a legitimate opportunity to climb the spire?

Hmm, let's see if my random historical knowledge pays off here:

He was a soldier/knight for England who cut those fingers off of French archers so they could no longer shoot arrows. It is said that this is where flipping the bird came from-- French archers who still had their middle fingers showing it to the English in defiance.

Wrong way around, Nick. The English developed the longbow first.

As such, it'd be the French doing the cutting, because firing a longbow (which needed the middle three fingers to fire instead of just the normal two) with just the ring finger would be impossible.
