My question is in the title.

Can anyone help me with this? I need to transfer some files from my XP pc to my linux one, and I cant work out how to set up a network for linux to Xp.

First of all what equipment you have? if you just want to connect the two computers you have, then you need a crossover cable. Otherwise, you would need regular network cables and a hub.

Second of all, do you know how to configure IP address for both machines? or at least, set it up so that they automatically acquire an IP address?

I have a crossover cable. I know what the IP is for my XP, but I cannot work out what it is for my laptop anymore, now i've got linux on there. Im a total newbie at linux btw

Linux is set up as standard, as Windows to aqurie IP addresses themself. Unless The Arkichef have some wierd Linux distro. Or if he don't have the drivers for the network card installed.

You need something more for transfering between Linux and Windows, and that's Samba.

Samba is a way to share files between a Linux and a Windows server. You may get some problems with it, but that's the only way I know.

There is GUI interfaces for Samba, which is a good idea if you don't like setting everything up manually, I test one of them soon. (I had set it up manually...)

I wonder... which Distro are you using? With some distros Samba is in-built...
