I'm certain we'll build them but I don't think we'll ever convert to them any time soon.

Say the year 3000 for example. I say we'll be living in a very technologically advanced era (granted Earth is still around) but I still think we'll be driving cars. The cars, however, will be a lot more advanced and efficient.

They will have to be more efficent because gas is quickly disappearing.

But this post reminds me of a story I read back in grade 6. It was called Zoo 2000 and at the beginning of the story, it seemed normal. However, by the end, we figured out that this was earth in year 2000 and all the humans wore white capes and had like 4 arms. And the animals were all mutated and deformed with mutiple limbs. So of corse we think that we will have flying cars in year 3000, just like these people (back in 1920's I think) thought the Earth would be full of white caped mutents.

Anyway, there are alrady flying cars, nothing like in the jetsons...but people have made them. If you watch Daily Planet on the Discovery channel (its an awesome show) you will see that there are flying cars. Only on some episodes tho, Im sure a few of you watch it...

And what's about small worm holes or teleporters?

And I wonder about the traffic problems in the air would be, flying cars shouldn't go everywhere.

And I doubt they disappear soon. Maybe get's less used to some extent...

Since technology grows in an exponential way (as stephen hawking says) perhaps in 3 or 4 (or even 2) centuries space ships will be able to be produced and used by human beings.

I think we could conceivably see the first wave late in my lifetime, actually.

Now, how long will it be before they supplant cars? That'll take a long time, certainly.

I imagine you'll be able to buy them at a reasonable price by the late 2060s. Hovercraft are easy enough to make, and you already can buy semi-flying cars for $50,000. They don't actually fly but they can be converted from a car to a small plane, and are both street and air-legal.
The biggest thing is safety, and also how to make them actually fly. A helicopter-like system would probably be best, but I'm not sure how fast they can actually go.

Personally I'd be impressed just to see hover-cars mass-marketed. Something that can go over land and water.

This seems like a unique poll...

The concept is very concievable. I'd have to say sometime late in the 21st or 22nd century when hovercars are mass-marketed. It would make travel so much faster...

2221 to 2650.

I don't think it'll take them forever to develop the technology, but certainly not in our lifetimes.

And to think that some people were predicting big things for the year 2000 in the 1980's.

I read some books saying things like 'Humans are gonna be able to live on the moon in the year 2000'. We're still pretty far from that thought.

I think it will be soon, but they will never be marketed. You will have no need gor something like that. Everything will be bought from a computer and everyone will have one first. Plus I think Earth is going to be gone in 40 years so don't mind me.

Attempts will surely be made, but Greenpeace and/or other ecoterrorists will just hunt an assassin on the developers if it will spend more than 3 and a half litres on 100 kilometres. (Sorry, but I can't (and therefore won't) write it down in gallons per miles, @Anglo-american readers) That means, my vote goes for "never", w00t.

Oh, and we've been building flying machines for hundreds of years. Thousands, perhaps. Hot air balloons, planes, hovercraft, etc. have been built for a hella time.

Problem is, these are relatively hard to do forms of transportation for the average person. Why should we start building flying cars and wasting fuel when we can just rely on public transporation and other mass transportation forms like MAG-LEV, jetliners, public buses, etc.
