Got this in an e-mail. It seems legit. Anyone a legal expert or want to try to debunk this?

IF YOU OPENED A PAYPAL ACCOUNT BETWEEN OCTOBER 1999 AND JANUARY 2004, YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO A PAYMENT FROM A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT.

PLEASE READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY.

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT
NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA
SAN JOSE DIVISION

In re PayPal litigation
Case No. CV-02-01227-JF (PVT)

NOTICE OF PENDENCY OF CLASS ACTION AND PROPOSED SETTLEMENT

1. WHY DID I GET THIS NOTICE?
You have been sent this Notice because the records of PayPal, Inc. indicate you are a current or former PayPal account holder. This means you may be eligible to receive a payment from the proposed class action settlement in the lawsuit In re PayPal Litigation, Case No. 02 1227 JF PVT, pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose. This Notice provides a summary of the terms of the proposed settlement. It also explains the lawsuit, your legal rights under the settlement, what benefits are available to you under the settlement, and how to get them.

2. WHAT IS A CLASS ACTION?
In a class action, one or more people, called Class Representatives (in this case Roberta Toher and Jeffrey Resnick), sue on behalf of people who have similar claims. All of these people are members of the Class. One court resolves the issues for all Class Members, except for those who exclude themselves from the Class. United States District Judge Jeremy Fogel is in charge of this class action.

3. WHAT IS THIS LAWSUIT ABOUT?
In early 2002, Plaintiffs Roberta Toher and Jeffrey Resnick filed separate lawsuits against PayPal, Inc. These two cases were later consolidated into one lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, entitled In re PayPal Litigation, Case No. CV 02 01227-JF (PVT). The lawsuit alleges that PayPal violated the federal Electronic Fund Transfer Act ("EFTA"), 15 U.S.C.

Seems true, at least according to snopes.com

So yeah, it's true. But then I don't think people will get that much money. After all there is so many Paypal users...

Yeah, I just read that. I guess it is for real then. I thought it probably was because it was from a paypal address and not some random spammer one.
I'm going to apply for it, but I doubt I'll get a lot seeings how probably everyone is going to be going after it.

I checked the header and that looked legit too, so I figured it was okay. Haven't joined it yet, but hey, people thought they wouldn't see anything from that CD price-fixing lawsuit and I got a check for $13.50...

I don't have a Paypal account, but now I might have to warn some people about it...

Although only a few I know registered before 2004...

Well there's no real reason to warn people about it. What they "did" isn't really that bad at all and no one (save for a few people) really had a problem with it. I didn't because I only used it for sending money, never recieving it.

I got the notice yesterday, so I assumed it was real.

I won't apply for anything...I mean, I have no need to. I just became a seller on ebay/paypal recently...so I don't need any of it.

I'm sure though, that people that this hasn't effected that are paypal users will jump on the bandwagon in hopes of extra cash.

Meh. I'm predicting a return of $3-4. Max.

Paypal is basically a way of paying for stuff online.

I'll apply. Or rather, I've tried to apply multiple times, but have yet to get all the way through the process. Still, I will perservere.

So that would explain a little of the lawsuit...
People (as in the supplier) thinking that they're getting ripped because of the lower online prices hosted by the web site.

Can't say that I got this e-mail (I usually delete most of the stuff that I get anyway) and I've only used Paypal a few times (just for some anime stuff), so I might not evem worry about this.

I never registered for pay pal. It's not like I had any money to buy anything online. I don't really know anyone who uses it . Or else they never told me but eh it doesn't matter. You probably won't get back much money.

it gets credited to your PayPal account anyway.

Still, it's worth a shot, I think.

I just might do it, not because of anything specific to the suit, but because of all the hassle I've been put through when trying to make payments through them. God forbid you should live at an address different from the one where you lived when you got your credit card, or have a credit card which doesn't bill you (it gets deducted from my bank account automatically), or, worst of all, live in two different countries and try to become a "Verified" member. Darn near impossible.

So for those of us who don't feel like reading 20 pages of legalese, what exactly is this suit about?

Hm... Credited money to an empty account is always good, especially when you don't have a credit card...

I too recieved this in an e-mail!

I have been a PayPal member for a number of years. It is wrong for PayPal to restrict a user's access to their OWN money because they have a goddamn hunch that fraud was involved. I do send and recieve money via PayPal, and I think it's a great service... but their actions aren't fair to innocent law-abiding users (or anyone, really). Good luck to those who sue.
