That's why I use it, this and the fact that It doesn't let much spywares install themselves.

MyDoom is just a stolen copy of Blaster that have been modified. So yes, the guy has no life + he really wasn't that much of a Virus creator.

"W32.Mydoom.M@mm is a mass-mailing worm that drops and executes a backdoor, detected as Backdoor.Zincite.A, that listens on TCP port 1034. The worm uses its own SMTP engine to send itself to email addresses it finds on the infected computer.

The email contains a spoofed From address, and the Subject and Body text will vary. The attachment name will also vary."

Guess I won't get this one ;P, I don't get much email and getting a suspected one means it gets baleeted.

Ironicly, I was looking at my main mailbox. I just got a message from Hotmail talking about their 'New & Free ' AV system. Nothing interresting, it's gonna suck.

^ Unless that was true, which I doubt, that was quite a pointless post.

So it only gets people who have MyDoom.A or are dumb enough to open the email? Guess I'm safe then. It won't even send itself to Gmail.

I've only ever had some simple crappy viruses that DLed themselves through Javascript and were easily removed in DOS. I haven't had one since getting Mozilla. (I would have once, if not for the fact that it didn't work on NTFS and AVG caught it anyway. You never know who you can trust... He wasn't very bright, though. After actually bothering to look at the files instead of just hitting 'execute' (a dumb idea, not something I'll ever be doing to a program again), it was named 'slideshow.com' and even included ASM source code. XD)

I think the point was for it to be a "welcome to last decade" kind of post. The Mydoom virus dates from last year, I think, although this is a new variant that brought down Google a few days ago.

Well, if you're stupid enough to open every attachment you get...

Meh... Mydoom is Mydoom. As long as you take the necessary precautions you should have nothing to worry about.

This happened like 2 days ago. Both google and yahoo got infected with the My Doom virus and they were down for hours. Then the cogeco people (which is what I have, cogeco) were doing work on the box out side my place. Don't know if its connected but eceryones computers went down over here. When they came back everything was fine. Then a virus just pops up on our screen, when no one was even on the computer! Very odd, never seen it happen before. So my mom went to the Techtv.com messageboards and posted this. They told her to go to start> run> and type sfc. That shows any corrupt system files. we had like 3, then more, and then even more. We ended up reformating this computer 2 times and now it runs incredibly slow. It sucks. All this from a stupid virus! We had nortons and everything up!

We would have a firewall but my mom can't get into her message boards with one on.

...I really doubt that all that happened because of Cogeco working on that box.

Either you already had a virus on the system or you picked one up soon after it went up. That shouldn't have any bearing on the maintenance.

As long as you update it...

I don't know if AVG is the *best* but it's certainly good and sure beats having to... obtain a copy of a brand name one.

But it's free, so it does make it better than a few ones *looks at Norton AV*

I love AVG myself. It caught a trojan/virus thing I was stupid enough to install. Totally my fault, and my instinct told me not to, but I ignored it. No real damage done, though it took about two days to completely wipe the thing from my comp.

I love cogeco its great, just slow... I live in canada, south eastern ontario. Don't want to give out to much info. I wasn't saying I got a virus from cogeco working on the box, I was saying that it was slow. It happens all the time when they work on the box.

Here's the article about it. Funny to see Google have an error message about not being able to run.

Additionally...Windows XP fans are going to be in for a hoot next month...when SP2 comes out. Go XP. I love my 2K Pro.

They announced a delay a few days ago. Second time already. I guess that's good though, got to make it as smooth as possible. They're finally enabling the built in firewall by default.

I'm expecting my fair share of problems when SP2 is released. Compatibility issues with certain programs is being expected. Oh, and it's roughly half a gig too but luckily for dial-up users, they're going to make it so if you get disconnected mid-download, you can resume it where you left off later.

It'd be nice if they'd make such large patches available over something like BitTorrent... that would make it a lot easier for people to get (especially dial-up users who get disconnected frequently), and it'd be cheaper for MS at the same time.

And I'm paying VERY close attention to the compatibility issues... I have lots of old apps that have had zero support for several years now, so if SP2 breaks any of those, I'm going to have some problems until I get my hands on workarounds.

XP have slightler better compatibility than Win2K, but not without problems.

The same trick about getting program to work in XP works in Win2K, such as replacing a certain file to make Command and conquer: Tiberian dawn to work in XP. Doing that trick sort of work in Win2K, but a error pops up each time before a movie is shown. (everything works correctly after the error thought, and it dosen't stop the movie )

I'm gonna wait a few days and hear if my favorite games/programs get problems with SP2. If they don't then I update right away. I just hope there won't be any big virus spread the days around the SP2 patch...

I've had viruses. I've had retarded people making ghost images of computer with said viruses. I now have 3 less computers than I started out with, we'll leave it at that. I hate viruses with a passion...
