And it's beyond me why the programmed the game to handle the big values as negative. But even if they did count 129 as a positive number the game would glitch out when you reach 256 (this is due how binary works) 1111 is 15 10000 is 16 11111111 is 255 100000000 is 256 But the game just handles 8 bits (notice that 256 was made of 9 0's and 1's, therfore being 9 bit), and therefore the first digit get's cut out. It get's into 00000000 which is zero. (for more binary info, use google I have used severeal "ranges", why Nintendo programmed the game to use negative ranges is beyond me. But then there maybe was practical reason for this. And in SMB2, if you get over 99 lives it uses letters. I do not rembember if it was hex or not thought... ...I probably confused people more than helping. ^^; |

If I had to guess, I would say it's because that's how computers handle negative numbers normally (The leftmost bit basically determines if the number is positive or negative). It probably wasn't Nintendo's choice in the matter.

I don't think it's possible in one sitting, but if you do the trick in 3-1, and 7-1, and 6-2, and 8-2, without losing a life in the process, it should certainly be possible to try.... |

The best way to go would be to treat only FF (255) as "Game over" after you die, and make sure it doesn't roll over to 00 if you get a 1UP with FF, but then it's impossible to reach 7F (127) without that trick ... except where you can score 1UP's from long rows of enemies, doing it repeatedly, but that'd take forever But they fixed it in Mario All-Stars, I remember doing that in 1-1 (second quest) and getting all the way to 127 lives (which displays correctly), and it wouldn't go past 127 ... |

It should be possible, without cheating, to get over 255 lives and 'see' the counter roll over. Or you can just use a cheat to lock the ones digit to 9 (I forget the RAM addresses, but the game stores the time, score, and coins one digit per byte), which effectively gives you unlimited time. You could also hack the time to 999 then disable cheats to give you that much time on the clock. Oh, and there is a place besides 8-2 where you can do the 1-up trick with a paratroopa on the end stairs, but I believe it's nearly impossible on NES, because it's fairly difficult to pull off on SMBDX, and we all know how the 1-up trick is easier on SMBDX than NES. There are normal Troopas in level 3-1 where you can do it, too. Also note that it's a LOT easier in SMB:LL, because the setup basically makes it so you can't miss the jumps (Because you're jumping "in between" bricks on either side of you). |

SMB2: P lives Best for emulated version... Very hard to do. Using the slot machine, try to obtain many lives by getting 3 "7's". Save state after each one. Once you get 99 and you still have more coins, keep going! If you have over 99 lives, it will still display 99 lives until you die once after. You will have P1 lives and you can die all you want. |

Thats not really any kind of trick, thats just manipulated a bonus chance with cheating save states.
