I use XP and I found it at 1st bad, because of the virus attacks and spamming from Microsoft, but if you have good tools to disable it and the patches for the worms, like Sasser or Blaster Worm, it is a very good OS. And you can change your theme and it looks much better than WinME or older.

I have XP, 2000, and 98SE (I have more than a few computers ).

I voted XP because I like it the best right now, as long as the theme is set to "Windows Classic" (I HATE the default UI theme for XP), but I can get along with any of them with equal ease.

Every now and then I keep trying to figure out Linux... but until I can play all of my games on it, it's not a serious option for me.

This poll seems biased toward Windows... and almost no other OS is covered.

But... I'm using Windows 2000 Professional, alas.

I used to have XP, and after the seventh re-install () I put Windows 2000 back on. Seems more stable... "only" two re-installs since switching to 2000 (). That's one thing I hate most about Windoze. No matter the version... it always fucks up things on its own one way or another. x_X

I've only needed to reinstall XP when changing the motherboard in the machine (and technically I could've done without reinstalling it then... but it was a good excuse to clean up my harddrive of stuff I hadn't used in a while ).

And you didn't tweak your computer in anyway? When I tweak my computer, that often happens. So, it must have been how you used your computer. Either that, or I'm in a minority

But otherwise, XP and win98 are good enough for me. As for how did I find Win98, I bought it myself. And I downloaded XP Pro legally because I'm a college student with access to Microsoft software because of my major

I use XP Home, and usually it's fine for a few months without a re-install. Mind you, I don't do anything challenging. No games, or whatever. Just Firefox, Winamp, Photoshop, AIM, MSN, WS_FTP and a few emulators.

Oh, and antivirus and firewall is usually good to keep things in check as well

Linux should just be Linux, there is so many Linux distros.

And where is the other?

I use Win XP for everyday use, but sometimes I use Win2K and Fedora core 2. Then I also rarely use Win98 and very rarely Win95 and Win 3.11.

I use windowsXP, I too have it set to classic. The default theme is so fugly and blinding. Its rarely buggy, as long as you keep your drive clean of ad and spyware.

I can't believe the only other operating system you have as a choice up there is SuSE. Most of the Linux users on this board use some other distro.

And what about Mac users?

Anyway, I use Windows XP. I've tinkered around with a few others, but I've practically almost always used Windows. Why? Because it was forced upon me at an early age when my parents finally upgraded our family computer from a "how the fuck should I remember because it's so old" to a Gateway "whatever it was" way back when. We were using Windows 3.1

Windows for Workgroups brings back so many memories.

Anyway, using XP now. Windows is the best operating system for me personally because I'm not a high end user who codes, debugs, run a server, whatever...

I use my computer for the internet, gaming, internet gaming, and other practical every day common uses and Windows serves me just fine.

I've never seen the BSOD on XP, only had one crash (and that's due to WinMX being a bitch), never had any virii actually affect my comp because I actually USE a virus scanner, never been hacked before probably because I use a firewall therefor no punk bitch script kiddie can get into my comp. And any real hacker that could get past it wouldn't be interested in my shit anyway. That, and I don't make a point to piss off any real hackers.

I've had a bunch of slowdowns before but that's because I was doing so much at the same time. I have had some slowdowns when I shouldn't have though. Not much, but still some.

I find that if you regulary upkeep windows (defrag, run AdAware every so often, don't install stupid shit like Weather Bug or certain screensavers, have a decent firewall, use good anti-virus software AND make regular scans AND scan before you open something you're not 100% positive is safe, etc...,) then you'll be just fine.

Do NOT try to uninstall Internet Explorer. I don't care if you can, it's just a bad idea. It doesn't take up much space anyways. Just leave it alone.

Oh, and don't use programs that are just big memory leaks. *coughcoughWindowsBlindscoughcough*

XP, it's alright except for being slow, resource-hogging and buggy. I also have Mandrake 9.1, I rarely use it because it hates my NIC. It seems pretty complicated, nothing I can't figure out, but it'll take some getting used to. The real problem is it seems so dreary and dark, I need to get some more jazzy themes.

I interpreted "how do you find it" as in asking where I got it. I guess it could also be interpreted as "what do you think of it?" heh...

Well, I find my operating system to be fairly smooth running, XP home. As Legion explained, its fine as long as you regularly scan your hd. Preventative care is also a major aspect of hard drive maintainance with XP.

Windows Server 2003.

Not on the poll, but it's based on the same core as XP, so I voted for it.

The Ultra w00t 9000 (Legion's name for my dual Athlon box ) runs Debian Linux, unstable version (which is actually pretty stable). I originally tried out Mandrake in late summer 2001, and I liked the Linux experience, but I didn't like how RPMDrake (the package managing application) decided to magically snarf itself one day, and I could never figure out how to fix it. We'd run into RPM dependency hell on a fairly regular basis, too (i.e. you need to install package A to install package B, but package B depends on package A).

We decided to switch me over to Debian, which has a package management system that I liked much more than Mandrake's. Debian's packages are much more actively monitored and tested, so things generally work better. You do run into the circular dependency problem sometimes, but it doesn't happen quite as often, and there are non-icky ways around it. I run the unstable variant because it gets new software before the others, and I'm not running a server or anything that needs anal-retentively excellent stability, so I really don't give a crap if something goes a little wonky every now and then. The worst that happens is you get a package that's borked and you have to wait for the maintainers to fix it (which generally happens within a few days to a couple of weeks or even less if it's a really bad bug in a package that's important to most people's systems), and there's a package that will warn you of existing grave (severe) bugs before you go to upgrade your system, so it's easy to keep from getting yourself hosed. (For example, there's something fooey about the latest Firefox package, so I'm not going to upgrade it until said bug is fixed.) I only ever have to reset my box when we upgrade the kernel (which doesn't happen that often) or in the event of a power outage or hardware fKitten Yiffer (both of said occurrences are also quite rare). My uptime record is something like 120 days.
