Well a (long) while ago, in WinXP, I mistyped a path and accidentally went to the non-existant folder "C:\D". This gave me the standard error message, as usual, but also another one complaining that it couldn't find the MSN Messenger EXE! I don't use MSN and as such deleted the program. One must certainly wonder why it was trying to launch itself... (I've since replaced it with a dummy program. When launched, it displays an alert showing the parameters, so that I can see just WTF it's trying to do. It's yet to happen again, though.)

Well, on this computer (not mine) MSN is used regularly, so I often find it left running. Of course, I simply right-click the icon and click Exit. Not a problem. 5 minutes later, an IM window appears! The tray icon has disappeared, but the program is still running. Even stranger is the presence of up to 3 programs at once; 'msmsgs.exe', 'msmsgr.exe' and 'messenger6.exe'. To add even more to the suspicion, if you try to close it while IE is open, it whines about "programs using messenger" and won't do it. Weird enough that I've never seen IE interact with it at all (except that when you go to Hotmail, it actually opens the program security hole waiting to happen), but go ahead and close it in the Task Manager; nothing breaks! And to serve as the icing on the cake, remember back when M$ forced all users to update and in the process locked out all old versions and unofficial clients, for undisclosed reasons? Hmm... (I even have unofficial reports that really old versions still work, too. )

That it whines about IE using MSN happens me too. But I have only seen it on my Win98 computer.

And for me it sounds like plain glitching, you did know that MSN starts if you enter hotmail.com?

I always have MSN running so I can't confirm that.

When I used MSN for a while, I had the same problems, and everything was slow. The whining about IE was common. I switched back to AOL not long after, and I've not any.

Hmm... Guess what just re-launched itself twice? Once totally invisible, until I got an IM, as in it actually logged in. The second time the tray icon appeared so I just gave it the 3-fingered salute.

Thus, it deserves the mockery name "Microshaft." MSN sucks too. Sadly, it has more n00bs, idiots, angsty teens and retards than AIM/AOL. There's a program or two out there than can nuke it. No wonder Hotmail users get all that SPAM, 5% are advertisers, and the rest are Microshaft-haters.

The reason could be a wrong installed Msg Plus!
Msmsgr.exe is Windows Messenger, it doesn't show the icon, you'll have to CTRL+ALT+DEL it every time, or update your Msg Plus! (if you have it anyway)

I like MSN better than AIM... AIM looks outdated. And it's installed in a folder named AIM95... hmm.

Besides I get more smart people on MSN here...

BTW, if your so scary about Windows. Why hadn't you tried Linux yet? (I have...)

I have, it hates my NIC.
BTW: The reason there's more n00bs on MSN is simple: MSN comes with every copy of WinXP, but AIM only comes with every subscription to AOL.

Millennium Neko:Well, the only reason I know about MSN log-in you in automaticly is because your connection was broken and then re-established.

I never really saw n00bs on MSN, only non-stupid people.

When I had MSN, there were a lot of n00bs. People I didn't know kept instant messaging me. The only people that weren't were my cousins, who now have MSN but had AOL at the time.

Ignore and okay, nothing too special anymore; the same things goes for ICQ, but in AIM I never got any unwanted message (if yes, the contact was okay and added to my list; since I usually already know him/her from a forum ) - and I even allowed all people to message me

As for the crash or the invisible instance of MSN Messenger - it's weird.
If you want ot avoid having it run without your permission (assumed you have NO spyware and already checked it with Spybot and Ad-Aware; and also scanned for viruses or a trojan horse), then disallow its powers in your firewall temporarily - so people also won't be angry why you don't anwser; your system doesn't show the activity openly, but the messenger runs all the time until you realize it

You should nuke the computer in the microwave

OR

Uninstall and reintall the updated version the computer and see if the problem self corrects with the updates they have regularly.

Yes korfan you got it on the dot. Now I must make a cover up before they realise what I am doing.

I don't use any of the messengers because they all make me mad. I used to have an AOL one, but it made me mad when AOL started sending spam to my e-mail. You know you sound like my mom though she thinks everything is a goverment conspiracy. (of course in a joking matter though)

I think that really you know that I'm onto you for being onto them for their plot to make you all buy more cerial. Not that I would know anything about this plot about advertising cerial as a "sugary" morning treat with bright colors and propaganda... *looks over shoulder*

You know what dracoon? Your mom is awesomely cool, but I think that I can guess why she thinks everything is a government conspiracy. I'm not being mean or anything. As I mentioned before, AOL is the devil. It crashed my computer...
