Alright, awhile ago Rydain made a thread like this. You might remember it. It was a great thread and a good lesson was learned by all.

But now, we have many new users from all over the globe so I'm making this thread again. If you were here for the last one, go ahead and post anyway. It'll be a good refresher because the board archive isn't here yet.

Basically, the thread title speaks for itself. I'm sure most of us are familiar with certain sterotypes/misonceptions about certain countries. Sooooo, if you're one of those countries, then set the record straight.

As for me, I'm sitting this one out. I don't want to come off as making this thread for the sole purpose of goodmouthing my own country. So please, go ahead.

Oh, almost forgot. Feel free to ask questions as well. I actually have one of my own. This may sound extremely stupid but...

Are Belgium waffles really Belgium?

Well I'll be damned. Never knew that. It's somewhat like chop suey. Chop suey is an American dish.

You mean like most "Mexican" food? I didn't know that. Cool.

Anyway, bit more specific than my country, two of the US states I've lived in...

Minnesota isn't cold all the time. There's 2 weeks of fall, 9 months of winter, 1 week of spring, and 2 months of summer. It's hot in the summer, and horribly humid. (Slight exageration with the season lengths, I know. It was mostly like that when I lived there though.)

Wisconsin isn't a vast expanse of nothingness. Just the area around my hometown is. There aren't cows everywhere, they don't have any in the area around my hometown. That's becouse a cow would break the monotonous nothingness of it all. My hometown is in central Wisconsin, for what it matters.

Well, okay... Switzerland is neither Sweden nor Swaziland (yes, I've met people who couldn't keep those 3 straight).
It's not always winter in Switzerland. There is a summer, and it's generally pretty hot in some places too (it peaked slightly over 40

Hmm okay, I'll give you some misconceptions of the US of A and my State:

USA-

We're not all ass holes.
A great deal of us didn't want the war in Iraq.
We aren't as stupid as our leader.
I hate oil.

Oklahoma-

Its not all cows and farms. It does have a vast amount of them, but its not totally comprised of it. I live in a small town of around 12,000 people, and there are only a handful of farms around my area.

The rest is actually quite technically proficient. I have a cable modem with a home network that can get download speeds of up to 120 kb\s (thats not bits, thats bytes).

We aren't all Native American. We have a great number of them, but there is actually a LOT of cultural diversity.

Oklahoma University requires a decently smart person to attend, an ACT of at least 23 with a GPA of 3.25 or an ACT of 25. That proves we aren't all dumb hillbillies.

Most of the people I know here don't speak with an Oklahoman Accent.

While it is the "Bible Belt," not everyone is a die-hard Christian.

Most respectable Oklahomans DONT LISTEN TO ALL AMERICAN REJECTS. Just because they're from Oklahoma doesn't mean they are good to any of us. A good Oklahoman band that won a few grammies is The Flaming Lips.

There are a vast number of musicians here... most of which don't listen to country.
We have 4 rock stations in my area and only 2 country.

Though there are not many broad misconceptions about Norway, because most people don't know jack about Norway, it is hard to debunk any misconceptions. I often see many misconceptions from people who claim to have knowledge about Norway, and it is those misconceptions I'm answering right now.

First of all, this country is not as cold as one may think. Granted, we are one of the northernmost countries in the world (the whole country lies about as far north as Alaska), but because of the warm Gulf-stream, the country gets heat. Greenland, which lies as far north as Norway, is 99% glaciers, Norway has only a few glaciers. The Gulf-stream helps a lot.
On the other hand, during winter, it gets colder than many people could imagine. Some places in Northern Norway have had nearly -50 C during winter.

One misconception which was big during the 1960's and 1970's was that Norway was a free-sex-loving hippie country. Granted, Norwegians generally are more liberal when it comes to things concerning sex and the roles of the two genders. That doesn't mean, however, that we all have sex wherever and whenever we want.

Norway does not have limited technology. We have one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, actually. The communications-devices per capita in Norway is higher than most other Western countries, actually.

Finally, one misconception that I saw was common among many Norwegian-Americans, was that all Norwegians love the dish lutefisk. Most Norwegians have never eaten lutefisk (I've had it once, and it tastes horrible), it's an old dish which is not made much more in Norway.

Also, some misconceptions about Scandinavia.
Based on what I've seen from movies and TV-series that try to portray Scandinavia, I say this: Fritz and Helga are German names, not Scandinavian. Lederhosen are worn in Alpine countries, not Scandinavian.

And finally, Finland is not a Scandinavian country, neither is Iceland. Scandinavia is only Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The term "Nordic countries", however, refers to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.

The modern curry originates from England, where the first curry powder was manufactured and sold after a revolution in cooking, prompted by spices being imported from places in the British Empire such as India.

Along with fish and chips, the curry has been voted the national dish of Great Britain.

About Kyoto:

* People think that everyone walks around wearing kimono and geta, and that there are geisha everywhere you go, but in fact there are only a few streets (Hanami-koji "Flower-Viewing St." between Sanjo and Shijo (3rd and 4th Ave.) in particular) like that.

* Kyotoites don't say "dosu" instead of "desu" at the end of the sentence, unless they're having a bit of fun with out-of-towners.

* People think there are temples and old houses everywhere because the US spared the city during the war, but in fact construction companies and developers have heartlessly replaced thousands of old structures with ugly concrete monstrosities. The really famous stuff remains, but a lot of the everyday stuff that people travel from across the world to see only survives in a few areas.

*ahem*

Canada is not cold year round. We are not far north (well the good in habitated parts) (in fact, where I live is actually more south than New York city, EAT IT!). Canada's industry is only partially lumber, that changed when we enslaved 3rd world nations to destroy themselves. Everyone in Canada says "eh", that is extremely untrue, only hicks like myself say that, I've never once heard anyone of power say it.

Canada has an illustrious set of inventions probably beating the crap out of those worthless "wanna Norther" Swedes (we're more cool than you are).

I'd like to make mention of the Ukraine, but 95% of people that I've met don't know where it is, nor that it is its own country, as well as the very place of world civilization; current theory puts the Aryan invaders (who basically changed India, the Middle East, Greece, the Mediterranean and almost all of Europe) to have lived around the Crimea and Balkans. Horses were first tamed in that land. At one time it had the largest empire in Europe (yes, bigger than Rome). Now, though, it is a sad country with most of its beautiful land marks and heritage destroyed by the Russians.

Since there isn't many misconceptions about the U.S. that I am not aware of, I'll talk about my state...

California. There are many misconceptions about this place.
Everyone thinks its hot all year around, but it's not. When it's winter, it's cold. When its summer, spring, and fall, it's mostly hot
Most people think that we are a bunch of surfers that talk like "Radical, dude. Yeah man, totally!" But we don't. And girls don't talk like this either.
"You know what? Like, OH MY GAWD, I got ketchup on my Tommy Hilfiger!"

No, we're just regular people. We talk how we want... it's pretty easy to live here. But I dunno... you might want to stay away from the windows.. you don't wanna get shot, do ya? =P

Suri Bear, I couldn't deal with Californian taxes! Don't you have a state income tax of something like 11%, and then a state sales tax on top of that, and this on top of all the taxes the federal government takes? No wonder prices are out of control!
