At present, I'm in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy for a growth in my chest that turned out to be T-Cell lymphoma. Because it was pushing on a bunch of vital organs, it initially looked like an enlarged heart (Which wouldn't have been that bad...Secretariat [Although he was a horse] had one and proceeded to destroy most every horse in his path..).

So apparently a third of my life will be spent in the hospital for the next year or so..every three weeks, I go for more chemo, which puts me up for 3 or 4 days. Hooray, or something.

On the plus side, this stupid cough will finally go away.

Shit man, good luck!

My sister had cancer when she was born, the tumor pushed against her spine and its now improperly formed, and for 10 years of her life she's had to wear a back brace to gently coerce it back into shape. She hasn't needed it for 4 years, but it was hell when she did.

Damn, that sucks.

I hope things get better... but I can imagine the chemo therapy won't be pleasant for however long it takes....

That really really sucks. I don't really know what you are going through, but hey if you are lucky or something (don't really know anything about this) then it will disappear without much problem. I hope you get through this without any suffering.

Whoa. Heavy stuff...

One thing I am glad to see is your (relative) upbeat attitude about it. You don't seem to whine about it, and I respect that.

Keep your spirits up, friend. My prayers are with you.

.....Geez.

What is the prognosis like? To me, it sounds like you're pretty upbeat and aren't letting this get to you, which is a great attitude to have. Chemo isn't pleasant, but if it's going to do some good... then good. At least we live in an age where, if cancer is found early enough, it can be defeated.

This still shouldn't be happening to people who don't deserve it... But life can be fickle sometimes. If this is the worst thing that happens to you in a long, fruitful life, then consider yourself extremely lucky.

Good luck with the treatment. I think it goes without saying that the whole community is behind you in beating this.

Thanks everyone.

To say that I haven't been complaining is a bit of an exaggeration...it just hadn't fully hit me as of then.

Basically, chemotherapy wipes you out. In my case, in combination with the steroids I was taking, it knocked me out completely so that I couldn't see visitors even if I wanted to. Now that I've accepted that (And I'm off the steroids), I should start feeling better about it as well. The fact that the swelling of the mass has gone down is also a plus.

They're looking to move me off of the ICU unit today, providing I remain stable as I have been. I guess I'm looking at going home in about 3 or 4 days.

So that's the story right now...thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Well, having the computer here helps. A lot. As I mentioned last night, being off of the steroids I was on doesn't hurt either.

I'll have to check to see the effects of the treatment as a whole...I've probably already said that I'll be back to normal after about a year of this (At which point the treatment will be over, and I only have to go for CAT-Scans every 6 months to check on it)...it's the interim that I'm concerned about. (Although I've heard of people being largely unaffected by the recovery effects of the chemo)

Apparently I'm still doing well, or as well as I can be, which is a good thing. The hardest part, like I've said, was the realization that "Gee, this may not be as easy as I thought", because I've generally had amazing recovery times from flu and the like. Now that I'm over that, it should get a little easier, although not a cakewalk by any means.

Thanks once again for all the encouragement.

God damn... I'm saddened to hear that. Kiwi directed me here. I am glad to hear that you're expecting to get well, but still, cancer is a bitch. Good luck.

Well... Ever since I saw the thread I've been kind of disturbed, didn't know what to post...

I hope you're in good hands, good medical hands that is, that you won't have to go through 4 months of treatment with no progress only to learn you have to start over with a new treatment...

Cancer is the most unfair condition in the world... In your case, it's a big manifestation of how much life is a bitch, since there's a pretty high chance that your T-Cell lymphoma was caused by a genetic defect which increased your chance of developing a tumor a million fold...

The father of a friend of mine had a very similar condition, he had a dormant tumor which stayed unnoticeable for years... At age 36 he got into a serious car incident, went into a coma... His weakened immune system let the tumor grow, but it was still too small to be noticed easily... A few months after being sent back home in a wheelchair, he started complaining about chest pains, the tumor had grown to approximately the size of a softball, right between his two lungs... Surprisingly, he got chemotherapy, saw a decrease in the tumor size after a month, and in 6 months the tumor was eradicated.

I hope you'll have a similar, "quick" and successful recovery experience...

Never give up.

I've been reading this topic for a few times and finally, I got something to say.I kinda know how it feels because my father died because of cancer. But in your case, you'll probably be recovering soon and that's good.

Well, I'm home now. Still tired, but eh, that's to be expected I guess.

I'm in just about the bext hands there are, from what I've been told. That doesn't make it any easier to go through, of course, but it's nice to know that the guy I ended up with (Dr. Bowen was his name) was pretty much the only guy ever considered for this treatment.

I go back to the cancer center Monday for some form of checkup. Then I think I'm home for a few weeks, then back for more chemo. Whoopee. And on this goes for about 6 months. Then I get to go for stemcell treaments, which should hopefully eradicate whatever's left of the cancer.
