The first rose I ever got my girlfriend, 3 years ago, was a blue rose. She still has it, actually. But I don't think it was grown blue.. as far as I can tell, it was a white rose that was grown with blue-dyed water. Are those ones dyed or grown blue?

In theory they can be grown blue if you keep dyeing them blue and use thier seeds. I don't think they really can though so they were most likely dyed.

Genetics can do lots of things, like making mice that can produce babies without the need of semen.

If I remember my Biology classes correctly...there'd have to be quite a bit you'd have to do to it in order to make it truely blue. That is, genetics-wise...since the base is red...the polar opposite is blue...and the odds of breeding such a thing naturally are basically zero. Genetics manipulation/enhancement'd be pressed. Dying is probably as close as you'll get.

Well, if they can make blue roses, couldn't they just as easily make roses of other colors? I have seen yellow roses. Green roses would look cool, I think.

The general range of color for roses is red to yellow (i.e. ROY) I'm not sure if I've seen a white rose but for the color barrier of yellow to be broken is quite a feat. Anyways, someone noted out that the rose is still purple.

anyways, according to another article, "natural" blue roses might not be seen at your local florist until 2007...

They've been wanting to make a blue rose ever since the started cross pollenating things since like...the 1800s...I forget the guys name that was doing as such with those pea plants and started off that way...wanna say it began with an 'M'...ah well...it's been years...but I doubt very seriously a few years work is going to change that.

We've been doing it for literally, since we've had agriculture.

We've developed grafting, cross-polination, seed mixing, etc. And these aren't new technologies.

They have glow in the dark flowers, just give it time before more craziness happens.

I have made my own coloured flowers for years!

Just lay the flowers in water and colour the water with something. I tested that severeal times.

The things people can grow nowadays... Like square-shaped watermelons.
Those look dyed but who cares? They are nice!
To me a flower is a flower, if it looks blue, it's blue.

I have got to see that .

Blue is my favorite color, and these new roses look very nice. Its not the most interesting thing to happen to plants, but it certainly is cool.

I remember back in my kindergarten to grade 5 years we would take a celery stick, set it in a cup of blue food dye, wait for like 24 hours and the leaves would be blue. It was cool at the time, but now...not so much. Anyway the coolest natural roses are black roses.

BTW, those blue roses look purple to me but thats probably because mixing blue and white would give a light blue/purpleish color. I think the coolest thing you could do to a rose is make it a mixed spoted color. Like blue and black. I don't know if it would be possible tho.

Or then again... they coulda just dyed 'em o.O

I've seen purple roses before, oddly enough. I've even seen natural-looking dark purple ones, but never blue.

Genetic tweaking, whee. Now why don't they work on something useful like giving me white hair, dog ears, and unimaginably strong legs? I wonder if they can do anything more advanced than simply chaing colours? Like maybe make them multi-colour, translucent, reflective, carniviourous, etc...
Personally I always wanted a blue banana. They look so cool on TV (even though they're fake).
