Earthbound has that battle system where you see your opponent face on, but not your own character. And when you attack you see something like a bunch of little scratches go over the enemy or a similar action. It is kind of like Pokemon but you don't see your own fighter. I was playing Earthbound and I don't like this system, even though I like the game overall. Does anyone like it? This would be extremely difficult if it is actually possible, but It would be cool if someone hacked an Earthbound ROM and implemented a whole new battle engine.

A lot of games have battles like that. The Dragon Quest and SaGa (Final Fantasy Legend) games, for instance.

Yeah, Dragon Quest does, but it was better, because the monster would be far away and there was some fighting environment and background. Earthbound the enemy is right in your face, it kind of looks dumb.

Here is a screen of Dragon Warrior (North American DQ)

It is a fairly attractive battle interface, actually.

I have no problems with the EB battle system, I'd have liked animations all the same, but sometimes imagining the funky attacks that the enemies have is more fun anyway. Example:

*The Annoying Reveler is reeling*

If you imagine that, it's probably a good bit funnier than what a 16 bit game would have looked like.

I agree with Grey, and I like the psychodelic backgrounds.

I'm told that Earthbound has that battle system to mock old video games like Dragon Warrior. It might lose a bit of its effect if it was changed.

EDIT: Eep, minor bump. Didn't notice, sorry ;

If you use RM2k and don't make your own custom battle system, you end up using this battle engine.
